[firstpost] Fallout 2 and Windows XP lockup problem

MazeMouse

First time out of the vault
Allright.
Let's just start off with my first post here (be gentle, its my first time ;))

I'm having a problem with fallout2. I reinstalled yesterday because I had a nasty virus which forced me to format my hard drive.
And now while playing I get some strange form of crashes while trasitioning area's.
Klamath General Area -> Klamath Canyon
Den East -> Den West (which completly removes the car from the game since west always locks up after the first time I entered)
Modoc Main Area -> Bed & Breakfast
Vault City Inner City -> Vault City Courtyard

So this makes the game somewhat unplayable. (and WAY less fun)
I tried some of the Windows NT options
I tried using the oldest drivers available for my hardware
I tried using the newest drivers available
I even tried my (not so legal) US version of the game (I hate the ELV version they sold here in the netherlands...)
I loaned the UK version from a friend of mine

All these versions kept having the same problems.
Black screen lockup, and after pressing ESC we're back in windows.

So in short: I NEED YOUR HELP!

EDIT:
Specs
P3 1GHz
256MB Ram
Geforce2 MX 32MB
DirectX version ATM: 9.0
Windows XP Professional (5.1 Build: 2600)

Can't help ya much but GET-A-NEW-WINDOWS. XP isn't best for games(to my knowledge). Since XP means X-tra Problems!

I'm already trying to figure how to get Win98SE back next to XP because all the problems started with XP

Can you tell us what kind of lockup it is? do you get a error dialog box? does the game just dissapear?

Also, if you haven't already, go to the fallout2.exe and right click, go to properties, and then compatibility. Messing around in those options has fixed every old game problem I've had to date!

I found 2 problems....
Patch 1.04 (den area location lock-up which I didn't know off at that time)
And kernell32 error (illegal operation)

So now using 1.02d and a 'new' version of my winXP WITH SP1 (FCKGW ownage.... ) and no more problems :)
Thanks anyway :)
