My Karma Just Ran Over Your Dogma
Lots of discussion about Dogmeat, so I thought I'd add to the bowl of kibble. He (she?) is a great NPC and even though he misses frequently, he does his share of damage, considering his only weapon is his bite. The problem is that the game developers didn't include a "stay" command (similar to the commands for the other NPC's), so he's always in the thick of combat and, later in the game, that means he's always getting fried. One of the walkthroughs on this page has instructions for keeping him alive until the end of the game, but, after reaching a Level 12 character, ready to take on the Military Base, etc., I just scrapped my character and started over. And when I got to Junktown, I just left Dogmeat, growling at Phil. Figured he was safer there. And part of starting over was for the random encounters, since the LE BB gun and the Alien Blaster are a lot of fun and very handy early in the game. Upped my Luck to nine, dropped my Charisma by one and added the extra points to Strength and Intelligence. Then I chose both Gifted and Skilled: Gifted upped the stats, maxing out Luck and returning Charisma to Average, but dropping my skills; Skilled restored the skills and I figured I could live without the extra Perks. What the Manual sez though is that Gifted gets 5 skill points less per level while Skilled gets 5 additional. So I thought they would cancel each other out, when fact is you really do lose those 5 skill points. Worth it just for that picture of Elvis, though.
