NPC and weapon combinations

an adjunct to Verminkillers' question below ..... I have just scouted the area around the military base and run up against some mutant patrols , who quickly made mince of Tycho and Ian . Since you cannot improve their armour , what is the best weapon to give them ( I have one of just about everything except Alien Blaster ....??? )????

My character has 115 % small guns skill , sharpshooter perk .......at mo using combat shotgun and going for eyes ( 95 % up close ) but this will be insufficient against mutants..........my big guns is only 32 % or something and plasma ridiculous...circa 9 %.............as stated , I have just about all weaponry but unsure which would be best with my stats ???

Comments and advice appreciated before attempt to take on mutants

Make sure you Tag either big guns or energy weapons.....you need them.....if you have melee or unarmed tagged you can still kick ass......the Red Rider LE bb gun is your best bet for small guns.....gotta get that special encounter though....those partol muties are not that tough.....as for NPC's.....they suck in FO1 so i don't use them.....Tycho is good with the sniper rifle , Ian is good with the .223 pistol, Katya or whatever is good with throwing knives and an SMG and Dogmeat is good at biting....but the lack of control over NPC's makes me not want to use any...hope that helps
