[FO1] Save file erased, can't make new one

Switchblade

First time out of the vault
Hi. I've tried using the search function to find help with this, but I haven't seen anything that looks like it matches my problem.

I got the Fallout Trilogy dvd a week ago and have been playing it with no problems so far (Win XP, SP3). Today I was exploring the sewers under Necropolis and was attempting to save my game when something unexpected and highly unwelcome happened. I got an error saying that the game was unable to save. I've logged several hours and several saves onto the game so far, but this is the first time I've encountered this problem. To make matters worse, my existing save file was erased at the same time this error appeared.

I've seen that uninstalling/re-installing should help, but I'd like to find a way to fix this problem without having to shut off the game and lose all of my data. Is there any way to fix this or do I have to start over from square one?

Thanks in advance.

Update: Exited the game and went back in. The problem is gone, although I did lose my save. I guess I'll just have to back-up my save before I play so this doesn't happen again.

Sigh. :(

I always use all of the save slots for a new character because they do often get corrupted.

If you have multiple playthroughs going on at once I would recommend going to your Fallout folder and renaming the savegame folder SAVEGAME("Your characters name") and making a second Folder called SAVEGAME("Your other characters name") Drop the save slot folders pertaining to the first character into the first folder and the second character into the second folder. when you want to play a specific character rename their save folder to just SAVEGAME

There's no auto or quick save feature but I habited myself to save all the damn time
