FO1 -- weird crash when travelling from The Glow

Bubick

First time out of the vault
Help! I got what I needed for the Brotherhood from the building in the giant crater at The Glow, and I am leaving to go back to the Brotherhood. However when I get to the exit grid and try to travel anywhere, I get the "you have died" screen and end of game!

What's with that? Is that a bug? If so, how do I fix it? If not, how do I avoiid it?

Thanks.

You've been radiated in the Glow. Before you go to the Glow, make sure you have two Rad-X (red-yellow) pills and take them as soon as you enter the location. You can get them in the Hub or Necropolis. They'll protect you from radiation. Don't hang around too long or they will wear off.

Damn, the Paladins said the place is *hot* didn't they?

That sucks dude!Hope you didnt save there...When I was in the Glow I only took one Rad - X and my radiation resistance got 98 % so I say - not a problem...and the same thing happened to me :) I died from radiation.

You will get radiated a few squares on the world map before the glow, so you may want to take the rad-x pills before you even approach the area around the Glow.

Pick up some Rad-Away's too. You may want to play this part of the several times, trying to find the shortest path through the base, beat the super computer at chess  , and grab all the goodies you need. At least your NPC's do not get irradiated.

Watch out for addiction. You may want to save your game before consuming Rad-Aways.

As I remember, if you get radiated too much, the game should stop you with a random encounter on the world map and tell you that you lost some attributes.

I disagree. Away from the Glow, the radiation is not very dangerous. It should notpose a great threat. If you take R-X that early, chances are it'll wear off before you even rech the Ancient Order.

Yes, but this only happens so with limited exposure (some 100-400 units) I don't remember the exact figures, but hopefully they're in the Ultimate Fallout Guide http://user.tninet.se/~wcw454p/guides.html If you absorb many units (>1000 or even several thousand, the game will end without even giving you a clue as to why.

Note that whenever you absorb a large amount of radiation at a single time, a message "You have received a large dose of radiation" appears. This will be imminent if you enter the map without R-X.

Thanks for the info. At least that explains it.

So, I took 2 Rad aways, and, while it lowered my radiation level, it still wasn't enough to stop me from dying when I left the area. I really don't want to have to play this section of the game all over again. I tried using the character editor to see if it woud let me remove radiation from my save game but that didn't work. Any other cheats to allow me to get more Rad-aways or remove ratiation?

Thanks.

RadAway is the orange fluid that you take after exposure in order to remove units that are already in your system. You need the Rad-X which temporarily increases your rad resistance (up to 100%) before exposure. I'm sorry, but if you're severely irradiated, RadAway just won't work quick enough to save you. You may resort to cheating, although I remember the most popular save editor - FALCHE - nott being able to edit the irradiation level.

It's been awhile since I played FO1, but in FO2 you can save a severely radiated character by using buffout and/or mentats just before the rad sickness hits. Severe radiation >1000 rads will drop ST & AG by 6, everything else by 5. If some of your character's stats (IIRC only some stats are checked) drop to 0 or less they die & you see the great white light...then roadkill...

You can edit in Rad-Away into your inventory if nothing else works.
