Wuz up? I need help with junktown.

I'm in this place called Junktown, and I walk around and hear about this guy the police are after, who also runs the casino. So I'm in the general store, and a member of his gang comes in and attacks. I kill him, and decide it's time for some payback. The police don't like this guy, so there on my side, right?

So I walk in the casino, and for no reason at all, everyone attacks me. I manage to kill all of them (Well, not really. Ian killed them all, my player sucks) and then I ran in the back. The boss talks to me, then his bodyguard attacks. I kill them both, and run out, expecting to be a hero.

But what happens? The police shoot me! After all I did! I saved the shopkeeper's life, busted up a human bucher / cannibal, saved a girl from a mugger (then slept with her :) ) and broke up a rigged casino (I lost 1204 Caps without winning once). So why are the police mad at me? And why is the civilian's chat text red?

Killing people for no good reason is against the law. You should have gotten a quest from the sheriff right after you help him kill the assassin to record Gizmo incriminating himself.
After you have the evidence, THEN you go after Gizmo with the help of Killian and some police.

Killian likes to play by the book, and not merely kill people who he suspects are up to no good.

Just get the quest to get dirt on Gizmo. Go talk to him and say that his assassin failed and that you'll do it for him. Go back to Killian and then say you'll help kill Gizmo. Please note Gizmo will initially deny involvement in trying to kill Killian.
 
Or...

(if you're being evil) you could just go bazooka and kill the whole town.
It's fun, just hear what Kane in the hub says to you...
