After you bought your car from Skippy in the Den, did you try to barter with him? He usually has an initial supply of, IIRC, MicroFusion Cells (150 or 250, I think). I don't know yet if he ever adds more to his inventory after the initial supply is gone; I haven't played the game that much yet. But in two different (uncompleted) games, I got cells from him after buying the car from him.

In case you didn't know this, you can also barter loot to him, and end up getting your 2700 gold back.

Later in the game, you'll probably have so much possible fuel that you'll never need worry about it.

However, if you have energy weapons to spare you might want to unload them for extra fuel.
