FO2 Black area feild.

Ok. I am running WinXP pro sp2, Pen II 249 MHz,with 640 MB RAM.
Graphics card is ATI "3D RAGE PRO AGP 2X" with 4.0 mb of memory.

The game is English US version updated to 1.2 ( I have killap's mod installed BUT! this error happened before when I didn't have it installed so it is not caused by that).

I used the search but after 5 pages of irreverent posts I gave up. I also searched this section up to page 10 without success. So you cannot say I didn't try

If I missed anything above then just tell me what else you need and I will find it.

I tried to get a screen shot of what happens but print screen and pasting it doesn't work for me(picture goes all black). So I will have to describe what happens below.

Ok, this happened to be several times before like in vault city, but the one I am having problems with now is Klamath ... more specially trapper town. As soon as I hit the grid the map loads and instead of going to trapper town I get transferred to a black screen. All the walls and ground is black I can still see the menu and my chars. I can load a game and return to before I went through that but when I try it again it does the same thing. I was in trapper town before and I don't know what is causing this.

Could I get some help identifying the problem?

I can't find anything wrong with your save, and neither will anyone else, well, except for the fact that you did a Navarro run.
That's what happens when you cheat...

Nah, seriously though, you have a problem with your protos.

1. If the *.pro files inside your Critters and Items folders (in ...\Fallout2\data\Proto\...) are not set to read only, they will be deleted when you start the game.

2. If critters.lst and Items.lst are missing from those folders (or if it's the wrong ones), but the *.pro files are there, you get the same symptoms you have. (*.lst files don't seem to be deleted when not read only)

3. Maybe those files where never copied there in the first place.

Any of the above conditions will give you the exact same symptoms you are suffering from.

If it's the read only problem you are having, make sure you set the other files in the proto folder to read only, or maybe they will be deleted later as well.

In short, you will need to reinstall everything. Then make sure that all the files in your proto folder are set to read only. You can keep your saves, there is nothing wrong with them.

Thanks for the response Darek.

I checked what you said. Both folders and its contents were set to read only. Also both .lst files were there. As I am unsure if they are correct I will do a quick reinstall which is no sweat off of my back.
