Can't find more ammo to buy

I'm having a problem with my game. None of the merchants I go to seem to get any more ammo in, and the merchants in San Francisco never have ANYTHING. This is the second save game that I have played and gotten to San Francisco, and the merchants there never have anything to trade, and I hear they carry some kick ass equipment. Can anyone help me?

RE: Can't find more ammo to buy

Hmmmmm nothing????? well.....if your game is patched then i would venture to say that your game files have been corrupted.....did your system crash at any time while playing??? do any other merchants have guns and ammo???? like the NCR guys or VC guys????? if they do then it's just the San Fran file....in that case go into your Black Isle files and delete it from the places file....then just travel there again and it should be normal....you might have to load a game that is to a point before you reached san fran...if that doesn't do it then you might have to start over...hope this helps....let me know.

RE: Can't find more ammo to buy

no, NCR and VC guys do not have any ammo or weapons except for what I gave them in trade. My game has crashed while playing, saying something about a page fault in the kernel32 dll file. Let me know if there is anything else I can do. And when you say the San Fran file, do you mean in the save game folder?

RE: Can't find more ammo to buy

Yeah....the save game folders...sorry.....i think you might have to do a clean sweep and reinstall and repatch....the whole game sounds like it's forked up.....i've had that happen to me before too....sometimes the game won't work if some other programs are running.....so i usually shut all but explorer down....some of the office programs have a tendency to do that....so just manually shut them down before playing....hope this helps.

RE: Can't find more ammo to buy

Thanks for the help, but I give up, I tried everything you suggested. I uninstalled and reinstalled. I shut down everything but explorer and systray. I deleted the San Fran file (which, when I started the game, caused and invalid page fault, but I had copied the file to the desktop), and still the merchants do not have anything in San Fran, nor do the other merchants carry new ammo and weapons. This happened in a previous save game file on a different character I had played, and I thought it was because of something I had done in the game (like killing off all the inhabitants of a city, which I didn't do with the new character). So, I think I'll just give up on this game and start a new game I got for Xmas. Again, thanks for your help.

RE: Can't find more ammo to buy

Sorry bud......did you manually delete the saved games too after reinstalling????? cause that would do it.....if you did that than i have no more solutions for you....sorry... i just play the game....some of the guys here know the real tricky programming stuff.

RE: Can't find more ammo to buy

Sad to say, you have described the exact problem I wrote about a couple of weeks ago. You might want to review my posting and subsequent replies under the heading "Shopping in San Francisco." Like you, I find that not only do the West Coast merchants have no inventory at all, but also that none of the previously encountered merchants add new items, cash, ammo, etc. to their stocks. I have revisited every location in the game many times to no avail. I have tried everything short of fiddling with the files, which I find intimidating. I still haven't been able to bring myself to dump the character and all of the work I put into it, but I guess I'm just postponing the inevitable. My question to all: When I reinstall the game and start over, do I need a patch? My copy of the game is Version 1.02, and from perusing the Readme file, I thought that the problems the patch was supposed to cure were already addressed in this version. Yet some of you have suggested that this crash might have been avoided by patching the game before I began playing. I am confused and apologize profusely for my ignorance, but will someone please set me straight on this?

RE: Can't find more ammo to buy

Well....here's what i know.....if the game crashes while playing some files tend to get corrupted sometimes....patched or not they get damaged....patching after files have been damaged will do nothing.....what was damaged was not something the patch was designed to fix in the first place....so patching in the middle of the game will not fix a corrupted file that was caused by a crash....when you reinstall the game you have to delete all of the savegame files manually so nothing from the game is on your system......then install the game then open the the patch file inside of the black isle files ....that will give you a clean install that's patched so none of the bugs that haunted the early players will get you pissed off.....even the version you have needs to be patched....there were bugs with every version that i've seen.....just make sure you have the latest patch and you should be fine...i hope this helps you...let me know.

RE: Can't find more ammo to buy

Thanks a lot, cobrajet56, for your very clear explanation. I have been gaming for a lot more years than I have been using computers. Heck! I've been gaming since before PCs even existed! I hate asking about stuff that most of you guys probably learned in kindergarten, but I do need help. Thanks again.

RE: Can't find more ammo to buy

You're welcome....i'm new to gaming myself.....i'm 35 and only started playing this game a few years ago.....and no i didn't play these games when i was younger...i was a total jock....lots of the people who visit here are young...they know more about this stuff than anyone i know...lots of good people here..... later bud.

RE: Can't find more ammo to buy

Well, at least I won't feel too old to be "playing video games". :D

Anyways, there are usually several reasons for the inventories problem to crop up. The biggest one has already been mentioned, the corrupted game files tend to be the killer. But, wait, that is always your last solution, don't make doing this into a habit, otherwise your game may not be able to run smoothly on you HD any longer.

1. First reason the bug maybe triggered - If you decided to watch the security video in SF BOS base where the doorman gets killed by Frank, this will sometimes trigger the bug that stops the shop owners from restocking, or their inventories may disappear all together.

2. The car. The car triggers so many bugs in this game, so there are certain players who don't bothers with it at all. If you are going to use the car, never let it runs out of fuel. That bug has killed many of hrs for many of players. The reason I bring the car up is that it's usually the cuprit for corrupting your game files. So, watch out for the car!! Oops, almost forgot, never ever leave your valuables in the trunk, because no matter how much it can carry, it's not worth losing anything important. There is also the problem of the trunk separating from the car if you leave too many things in there.

3. The most annoying problem. The item bug. The game DOES NOT like to keep a track of large amount of items, and even if you think otherwise, it's not wise to risk it. One of the biggest bug that corrupts a lot of games is triggered by putting large amount of items in your trunk. When you start to log all that junk around, the game has to create a new items' list in all different locations, the game engine did not design to take this stress, so BOOM! And it's not just your trunk that may encounter this problem. Don't sell too much useless junk to just one person, this may trigger the bug as well. You should always try to sell the merchant the things she/he already has in stock, so the merchant can get ride of excess inventories. Sometimes I'll even buy back the junk I sold them and go dump in somewhere else. And, don't get all your beautiful collection of bozar, m60, and turbo plasma rifles in one place, you just may lose some if not all of it.

Well, hope that helps.
