Can't get out of combat mode - bug?

I've just started Fallout 2 and have completed the first temple quest. I'm now in the village, and have been asked to kill the two spore plants in the garden. I have killed them, but my character is still in combat mode and I cannot see any enemies about. After I "use up" the rest of my turn points, I get another 8, then another, etc. as I am walking around the village, and I can no longer talk to anyone - the only option is to attack somebody - not, I think, the required action. I have tried using different saves to get to this point and the result is always the same. So, is this a bug or have I missed something related to gameplay? Is there another enemy somewhere hiding in the garden? If it is a bug, is there a patch I need? (I can't stand it - I loaded three new games yesterday and so far none of them have worked properly! Girl just wants to have fun). Please help as I really wanted to play today.

Quite possibly a bug - there are plenty of times I've played where no obvious enemy has been around that I've not been able to get out of combat mode. If you've just started playing you've probably got the new Fallout/Fallout 2 combo budget pack so you won't need to patch your game.
Anyway you can always get out of combat if you leave an area, so head for the green exit grid in the top right quadrant of Arroyo and when you are in the next area you should be out of combat.

Make sure you have version 1.02... if not, patch up to it. You'll lose your saved games, but it's well worth it. You're not far along yet, anyway.

I've had similar problems, but I've been able to get out of combat using a combination of the space bar (end combat turn) and the Enter key (end combat). If you're stuck in combat, try using one of those one turn, then the other the next turn if you're still stuck. Sometimes those keys will work when just using up your action points fails.

(Later in the game, you may run across situations where there are enemies off screen, and you'll think you're done or you'll think you're stuck in the middle of a turn... don't mistake that for a bug. I doubt that's what's happening to you now, though.)

This is a dumb question, but just in case... have you tried pressing the "end combat" button in the bottom right corner of the screen? You didn't mention pressing it... if you have tried it, what happens when you press it? Do you get any message?

Sometimes I've seen combat not end automatically, but the button ends it OK, so give it a try if you haven't.

Yep, in this particular case, combat never ends as far as I'm aware. I've replayed about 10 times and each time I need to end combat manually.

As a rule, end combat in towns when you can, if no hostiles are nearby. In the Den or New Reno you can get stuck in Combat mode for ages.
