Fallout 2 won't run anymore

I just recently did an clean install of Win98se on my Dell PIII 700. I made sure to install the latest drivers from NVidia for my GeForce 256 video card and Directx8. I've tried a large and humungous install and when I try to load the game it says "please wait" and then drops me back to the windows desktop! I've gone through interplay's troubleshooting document and it didn't help. I downloaded the directx "certified" vidio drivers from Microsoft, but it doesn't help. Anyone got any ideas? All I can say is it worked in the past, but not now so the problem must be with drivers or software. (I've also tried the patch.)

Some tima ago I had (exactly) the same problem.
The reason was, that my critter.dat was broken.
Copy the master.dat and the critter.dat from the CD to the HD. Mabe that helps..
If not... Buy an old system and play F2 on it :D

The problem is that it DID run on my PC, but now it won't. The problem is not with the hardware, but with the software. I will try what you suggested, (actually, I think I already tried that)but it doesn't make sense why it worked before and not now.

It could be DX8. It's packed with errors.
