gaining radiation levels?

I'm still early-n in the game (just got vic). I've noticed that sometimes when my character does something in place for a long elapsed period of time, I get radiated:

For example, when I dug the grave to bury Anna Winslow's bones, I got 10 radiation levels for my trouble. Another time, I slept at the inn in klamath, and got 2 rad levels. Often, after trying to use first aid/doctor a number of times in a row, I'll also get radiated.

This isn't happening in some wierd place: this happens to me in Klamath and The Den.

So my quesions:
- Is this normal? What exactly causes these rad level gains and is there any way to avoid it?

- I used up the 2-3 rad-aways I've gotten - will I be able to get more as necessary later in the game?

- what level of radiation is dangerous? Should I try to cure it immediately, or can I wait until it builds up a bit? How much can I take before I need to cure it?

Thanks!

RE: gaining radiation levels?

I can answer some of your questions...

That's perfectly normal. Someone jump in and tell me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that no matter where you are, you run some risk of exposure. Some places are far less dangerous than others, but you're never totally safe. (BTW, I have also absorbed rads in Klamath)

I have never been radiated to the point that I took damage, but you will get a warning when you hit 66. I usually let my level build up until I see the warning before I use any RadAway. You will find more, but it can be very expensive if you need to buy it, so it's better to hang on to it if you're only sporting a low rad count.

Anybody got more info on dangerous levels?

RE: gaining radiation levels?

If you got a couple too many rads running in your system and you enter the world map, you can expect to die within about 1 second of travelling. Your character will feel very nauseous sometimes, this indicates a high rad count (altough the RADIATION-warning may not be visible when you get this message). Stat point loss is also a reported phenomenon of radiation sickness, as I recall.

RadAway will be scarce in the early stages of the game, but you'll have loads later (and in fact, you rarely even need it so it's likely to pile up on you). I would still recommend that you always keep at least 1 RadAway available stashed in your car or just in your inventory in case the radiation-warning pops up on you. Remember to sleep well after taking some - I think 1 RadAway can clear about 50-75 rad points...

RE: gaining radiation levels?

One suggestion. Keep the radiation untill you get to VC. And, another thing. Get your doctor skill up to about 95%.
