getting dogmeat

hi my name is sabrina and i am a long time player of fo2 and i was wondering since i have found dogmeat but i have never been able to get him as a npc can anybody help me ? :'(

If you get the random encounter where dogmeat is found, take of all your armor and talk to the critter. That should do it.

A useless bit of info but I found that when I use a fuel cell on Dogmeat, it somehow refuelled the car. Or was that on one of the other Cyber Mutts? Dogmeat is pretty cool, if not usually a little too weak by the time you've found him.
