Hopelessly screwed?

I recently took my first stumbling steps out into the FO2 wasteland. I took a little different approach to creating my character than I did in FO1, and I've been struggling much more to advance through the game. It's a fun struggle, of course, but I've been haunted by the notion that maybe I've already blown it. It seems to me that it would be entirely possible to put hours and hours into the game, work through the quests you ran across, and yet still be sorely unprepared for the final confrontation(s) due to an indiscretion committed earlier in the game. A simple example would be setting your intelligence too low to provide sufficient skill points to develop a viable character... such a problem might not become apparent until late in the game. Even though the gameplay is balanced, there must be limits to what handicaps can be overcome. As such, I ask you this, not looking for a solution to my particular problem, but more as a general discussion topic:

Have you ever made a mistake, either in character creation, character development, or gameplay, that effectively rendered you unable to complete the game?

(And please, if your response contains any spoilers, please mark them clearly. I'm still on my first game, as are many others here, I am sure.)

all obsticals can be overcome in the fallout world :D

unless u set your strength or agility to like 1 or somethin.. :)

RE: Hopelessly screwed?

I've created a character with intel of 1. I got lots and lots of funny dialogues (insults) and it was a bit difficult to develope my skills. I ended up pumping all my skill points in to small guns.

It makes for a really tough game. I missed out on nearly all the quests. Luckily for me, the merchants have no problem selling bullets to an idiot. My char ended up being a "shoot first, shoot later and shoot 'em again" onery SOB. Wiped out most of the towns near the end, after I got my small gun skills up to 176%.

Maybe if I used an intel 1, agil 1 character, I'd be screwed. :D

RE: Hopelessly screwed?

Character creation is all a matter of style. I usually take gifted, take all most of the points out of strength and endurance, and put them into intellegence, charisma, and agility (and at least in FO2 (thanks to all those upgrades) luck too), and do just fine. I can't fight as well as most near the beginning, but get lots of skill points and pick up perks like sniper and bonus ROF. By the time I pick up a pulse rifle or gauss pistol, I'm lethal.

RE: Hopelessly screwed?

We seem to have the same philosophy of character creation. It was, in part, straying from that philosophy that eventually lead me to start this thread. I've come at it from a slightly different angle in the "Imperfect Character" thread, which will hopefully provoke a little more discussion
