[FO2] How playable is a one-hander ranged character?

Golan2072

It Wandered In From the Wastes
I'm thinking about re-playing Fallout 2 (I've finished it twice and nearly finished twice), with a somewhat different character - either a melee one or a one-handed gun user (so many pistols and SMGs I've never used before). How playable is a character using only one-handed ranged weapons (and having the "One-Hander" trait)?

Well, you won't probably be able to find the Alien Blaster easily, so no hi-powered weapons there. In mid-game, you can use SMG's and the HK P90c, which are fine weapons. Later in the game, you'll probably want to use a Gauss Pistol (very good) or a Pulse Pistol (small magazine). I recommend you take a high Small Guns score and go for aimed shots.

You unfortuanly can use the best smg in the game, the H&k G11E, since its two handed. Other than that, its not to hard to do.

you might have a little trouble with horrigan but if you get the turrets, enclave troopers, and your npcs to attack him while you have the gauss pistol you might be really good. iv never tried a one hander myself but now that i think about it i guess its better so Vic and Cassidy could have gauss rifles and the better rifles

At worst I'll invest in the Unarmed skill as well (it starts quite high, alot of conversations increase your skill, and it is used in many quests). But yes, the turrets, NPC(s) and Enclve guards will also be capable of doing this work.

My Current Setup:

Female, age 25

Stats: ST 5, PE 8, EN 4, CH 6, IN 8, AG 10, LK 6

Traits: Gifted, One-Hander

Tag Skills: Small Guns, Speech, Lockpick

Skill Progression: First max out the three Tag ones, then move on to Science (up to 125) and Doctor (up to 75), then Unarmed, then Repair, then Traps.

Perk Progression: Level 3 Smooth Talker, level 6 Quick Pockets, level 9 Better Criticals, level 12 Living Anatomy, level 15 Bonus Rate of Fire, level 18 Action Boy, level 21 Action Boy, level 24 Sniper.

NPCs: Sulik, Vic and Cassidy early on; I'll let Vic go once I find Skynet/BrainBot. I'll take Skynet/Brainbot with me to the Oil Rig.

Playing Style: First and foremost a pistolero, high Perception and Agility and nice Luck make this quite easy; also a manipulative diplomat (will take the Smooth Talker perk).

Roleplaying: A gold-hearted "cowgirl" or rogue; steals (from lockers/chests etc, not people), but not from poor people; has honor so won't seduce/have sex with people to manipulate them (i.e. no discount at Metzger's) but only for sentimental worth (won;t mind a little flirt with nice NPCs). Will do quests for "nothing" if they serve a good purpose; will usually choose shooting rather than a peaceful solution, though.

I like the stats from per's guide for gifted gunfigher...

Gifted / Fast Shot

ST 5
PE 7
EN 4
CH 6
IN 7
AG 10
LK 8

You could trade 1 pt in AG for 1 in PE...

+4 ST from advanced power armor, +1 from module
+1 PE from module
+1 CH from mirrored glasses, +1 from module
+1 IN from module
+1 AG (if you didnt put 10 in it) from module
+2 LK from ncr zeta scan

*edit*

Your final stats should look like this;

ST 10
PE 8
EN 4
CH 8
IN 8
AG 10
LK 10

10 luck is very important, 100% criticals with sniper perk, ability to get alchohal raised hitpoints II perk, and quite a few other things.

Is it? You won't have Sniper until very late, so you might as well settle for 8 points. Maybe even less, since you can boost Luck by 3 points max in-game. Hitpoints raise is infinitesimal, although a nice thing to have, it's less that what you gain with a level or two. Not enough HP's? Take Lifegiver early.

I'd take one less ST point, too, and take no less than 8 IN, especially with Gifted.

You can still shoot it, just a bit less accurately. With One Hander, this shouldn't be much of an issue.

You might want to consider using Fast Shot with One Hander, because of the insane number of times you'll be able to fire in a round.

I think... six times with the Gauss pistol assuming 12 APs? (Action Boy perk x 2 and 10 agility.)

I prefer Gifted/Fast Shot with ranged, and Gifted/One Handed for unarmed. My small guns dude just reached 24! Sniper and 203 small guns! Funny to take out super muties with 2 hits from .223 pistol. I would use gauss but i let cassidy have all 2000 somthin gauss rounds
