HtH character ... bad idea?

Has anyone tried a character specializing in hand-to-hand combat? I'm a bit skeptical about the game balance. Sure, some of those higher-end attacks are vicious, but they eat up loads of AP's, limiting you to one attack per round in some cases.

Is an HtH character viable? More importantly, is it fun? Any tips for playing one?

I never, ever, use the peircing punch or kicks because of the high ap drain. I use regular targetted attacks.

Yep, after getting 200% HtH, 2 bonus ap, 2 bonus moves, HtH attack bonus and Slayer, a HtH char is very powerful. That type of char, with a Big Frigger mega-power fist, can easily kill a Deathclaw in one combat turn.

That's a matter of personal opinion. I think it lots of fun. :)

Don't pick a fight with King Arthur and his minigun wielding knights. Hahaha! Well, perception is a low priority stat for a Karate Boy. Also a big group on your side, means fewer foes will target you.

RE: HtH character ... bad idea?

I've only gone down the HtH path once, but had small gun skill as a backup. It's crucial you get all the h2h perks and get some decent weapons. The thing is you need to get close to enemies to attack them which leaves you vulnerable to attack... and more likely to go splat against a heavy weapon. Also you can only hit one enemy per attack whereas with a Bozar or other Automatic Gun you can hit multiple targets. Then you need to worry about the ability of your npcs. Vic and Cassidy aren't very competent with burst weapons at first, it takes a few levels before you can rely on them, but they'll never be as good as you could be.

HtH can be fun, just a lot harder. Especially early on maybe. I didn't bother playing through the entire game as a HtH specialist but I'd recommend stocking up on stims. Good luck.

RE: HtH character ... bad idea?

actually 99% of my characters have been H+H... ranged just doenst cut it for me. Better criticals is a must for H+H chars too.. makes instant death criticals much more often, also you dont necesarily need lots of strength, what really matters is endurance and agility, put luck low, charisima isnt really needed...

RE: HtH character ... bad idea?

My advice is not to put your luck low as that bad luck dog will always get you. Keep your luck at least at 5. Charisma on the other hand, dont let it go below four.

RE: HtH character ... bad idea?

whats so wrong with the bad luck dog? just punch him in the eyes and you might get an instant death critical and kill him =]

no loss

The thing is that you hardly get criticals when you have the dog. And when you do they tend to be critical misses. With my HTH character it took me over an hour to beat him to death.
