FO2: instant kills

How do these instant kills work? They seem to appear more often while boxing in New Reno, but also sometimes in normal combat. Guess the luck's involved, but killing 2 out of four boxers in Reno in the first round this way IS a little confusing (LK 6).

Instant kill is the best possible result from a critical hit.

All the insta-deaths I've seen always came along with an obscene amount of damage. I've never seen one with no damage...

Sometimes you take less than lethal damage but kill the opponent - it happens to me always when fighting with a sharpened spear with molerats.

I haven't noticed yet a kill with no damage yet, though.

It seems that the damage yuo cause is not important in this case, since the comments you get are quite the same (brain, spine and probably something else) no matter how many hp's did the shot take. Maybe someone knows how exactly are these hits scripted in FO2 combat rules.

The amount of damage done was insignificant, it couldn't even warrant a damage multiplier, but it was an outcome on the crit hit table that resulted in instant death.

It looks like you were aiming for the eyes. Eye crits often are like this, but it is funny when there's no damage done.

I killed sometime ago, a men with 65 of HP, my damage was:

Villager was critically hit for 5 hit points and his spine is now clearly visible from the back!

It is a Sudden Death, or a perfect critical hit!

It seems to happen more with certain weapons. The .44 Magnum Revolver seems very good for this (if your small guns skill is high)

I once killed the liutenant in Fallout 1 with first shot (scored 32hp damage).

If you get the sniper perk with 10 luck, and better criticals, you can take out the enclave with a pipe rifle. With those stats, instant death is about 30% of all hits. It's crazy.
