Question about the random encounter PariahDog and perks Gain

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Oct-16-02 AT 10:12AM (GMT)[p]edit: in gameterms it is called a "special encounter", right ?
forgot about that when i sent off the thread, however :-)
and feature instead of bug, yeah ? ;-) (stupid newbie questions *g*)

first of all:
i am playing with patched US version

Special Encounter:
1. How do I get this encounter ?
Max LK req ?
2. How can I exploit that "famous" LK bug (shoot him, then end combat ? -->gets liking / but LK stays same... ?¿) when I run across that doggy

Gain IN
I wondered that it would just work for NPC / Speech reactions (if it does at all, i already got a high IN (was 8)) as it doesn't give extra skill points to distribute per level, stays the same :-(

Gain EN
doesn't give extra hp when gained with an uneven number of EN (say from 9 to 10) just extra rad and poison res

again:
that a bug or actually the way it was supposed to be ?

I would really appreciate any helping answers regarding my questions :-)

RE: Question about the random encounter PariahDog and perks

i am confused about whut you said man like whut in the blue hell are you talking about

RE: Question about the random encounter PariahDog and perks

as from rumours that I heard one can get +1 Luck through that PariahDog Encounter by shooting at him from a distance then recruiting then killing him or the like
I wanted to know how it actually has to be done and what factors play a role for getting that encounter

regarding my other 2questions

I was wondering, that when you use the Gain Intelligence Perk you don't get an extra 2 skillpoints per level
what would seem logical, wouldn't it ? Or what would you need it else for ? for npc dialogue options ? lol ?¿

And when one uses the Gain Endurance perk it does nothing else than giving one some extra poison rad res, maybe an extra point in healing rate, but no extra hitpoint / level when done from an uneven number of base Endurance of one's alter ego

see ?

Not really sure man

When you enter the character screen after levelling up you get new skill points before getting to choose the perk, so Gain Intelligence has no effect on that particular level. It should affect skill points for any future levels, though. Did you check that?

yep i did, didn't have an effect on gained points at future levels, stayed 18 (9->10) when i remember right

but mebbe i check again and this time it works ?!? :-)

thx for your answer though, Per

edit: checked again using the ShiBug, Gain IN doesn't affect skill points gained in future levels, does nothing more than the Smooth Talker Perk lol :O)

RE: Question about the random encounter PariahDog and perks

When using Falche I noticed that raising your IN doesn't affect skill points per level, so I figured maybe there is a kind of derived stat which is not recalculated from IN every time you level up. Presumably a function call within the game to raise your IN would then also raise the skill points variable, but Falche would neglect to do this. I tried getting the Brotherhood IN raise and did get extra skill points per level along with it. So maybe the explanation for your problem is simply that Gain Intelligence doesn't touch the skill points per level variable (if there is one).

RE: Question about the random encounter PariahDog and perks

I think I have figured out what is needed to get the bad luck dog thing to work. It seems that your luck stat has to be 3, 4 or 6.

Let me explain. When I first tried this my luck stat was two and then nothing happened when preforming this trick, but after I used the gain luck perk my luck stat was three and I tried again.

This was the way it worked for me. First time I entered I shot the dog with a 10mm Pistol (so that he wouldn't die at once). I pressed end combat, but it didn't work course the message box said that you can't end combat with hostile critters. So I pressed end turn. The dog run away to the west and after it had ended its turn I was able to end combat. Now I moved my chara slightly under the dog and went to the right hex until I got the message that it followed me. I emiedently pressed A so that I would be in combat mode. I checked my chara information and saw that I my luck stat still was 3 but I was jinxed. I pressed down the chara menu and killed the dog with one shot and looked at the chara menu again. I had lost the jinxed perk but my luck was now four.

When I did this a second time my luck went up to six and after that to ten.

The bug seems to depend on the hexes that you stand on. When you encounter the encounter for the first time and move straight against the dog your luck will go down by one. Now after killing it you will get +1 again. Doing this a second time you should lose 2 luck points and doing this a third time you should lose -4 luck points (if your luck count is that high). But if the dog wont join you in the right hexes you wont lose anything.

Also you don't need to kill the dog in one blow.

RE: Question about the random encounter PariahDog and perks

As with the relationship about INT and character pts, I think it may have to to with another perk all together.

Well, actually -
I've noticed that if I raise my cpts/per level with other means, such as a perk, then raise my INT, my cpts/level stays constant. If I raise my INT again after that my cpts goes back up, so it seems to me that the skill(cpts) stays constant with your INT even after you raised cpts/level artificially.

Wonder if i got that right ;-)

So you can get this encounter again after killing the dog (like the trader and guard encounter for instance) ?

and by the way you killed that dog three times your luck raised from 3 to 4 (+1) to 6 (+2) to 10 (+4) ?
That's for the case you stand on the right hexes when "recruiting" him, which you have to figure out first, right ?

And if you approach him on the wrong hexes your luck will go down for the same amount for each time killing him ?

You got me right there. Yes as fast as you encounter the random encounter it will turn up as a location on your map. The dog will respawn every time you renter the encounter (of course he must have been killed).

EDIT: If you want to prove it yourself very fast do this.

1) Create a new chara with 3 LK.

2) Be ready to leave Arroyo.

3) Download Datman

4) Search the master.dat file

5) Find a folder called maps

6) Extract the rndpiriha.map and kladwntwn.map (Might have misspelled that = Klamath Downtown) into your Fallout 2 folder.

7) From here go into your data folder (if it isn't there create it).

8) In that folder go into the folder named maps if it isn't there create it).

10) Copy the rndpiriha.map and kladwntwn.map here.

11) Now right click on kladwntwn.map and choose change name.

12) Copy the name and put kladwntwn.map into your rubbish.

13) Now right click on rndpiriha.map and change name.

14) Change it to kladwntwn.map

15) Start your game again.

16) Leave Arroyo and enter Klamath.

17) You will be in the encounter.

P.S. you maybe want to pick up a pistol

will do :-)

damn, that Datman proggie keeps telling me about a missing mscomctl.ocx even after I installed the vb runtimes on my win2000 machine

Is this a win9x only program or am I just too stupid to get that thing working ?

RE: Question about the random encounter PariahDog and perks

Have you pressed the zlib.bat file?
Double click and see if it works.
If not you maybe have to download a diffrent converter.

RE: Question about the random encounter PariahDog and perks

When I want to get a certain encounter I edit Worldmap.txt. Put a copy of that file in /data/data, select a random encounter table, change the relative probability of that encounter to 99% (or something), start up the game and move to the encounter zone in question. Pretty convenient, and this way you can be sure the game won't behave in any way it normally wouldn't once you get the encounter.

RE: Question about the random encounter PariahDog and perks

don't have that file, just the .dat

Guess i'll have to search for another working(!) "extractor" first x(
