retarded & inexplicable savegame corruption

Every time I haven't played Fallout 2 in awhile, I forget that the reason I never play it any more is that it's full of retarded bugs which corrupt savegames and destroy weeks of progress. It is infuriating that such a great game has such glaring errors and that it is such an ordeal to get a decent gameplay experience.

This particular time, an error has caused me to lose a perk. It occurred without any modification of a previously OK save file, and in fact it affected ALL my save files.

My character is level 7 and I have been saving perks. I did not take either of the first two perks, so that I can choose what they will be later on in the game. This has NEVER been a problem before and the game always seems to keep track of how many perks you have saved up. It works the same with skill points.

However, it stopped working without notice -- right after I checked to make sure it was working correctly and found out that it was!

I was in Gecko, I tried taking both perks just to make sure the game still remembered I had 2.. and it did. Twenty minutes later, running from a different (later) save file, I tried to do it and found that the game had "lost" one of the perks. When I went back to the Gecko savegame I discovered that the perk had been "lost" in that save too!! Every single one of my savegames is now "damaged" in the same way, despite that they have not been modified, and I am stuck with only one perk at level 7.

I have tried deleting fallout2.cfg and worldmap.dat (on the reasoning that some file had been changed to cause the bug) but this has no effect. As far as I can tell no other file has been altered.

WHAT THE F*CK IS GOING ON?

Erm... the documentation states QUITE explicitly that you cannot do this. No one ever has been able to. If you did you were the victim of a horrible anomaly which apparently has now corrected itself. Sorry.
