Strange, specific questions, or pipe dreams?

Hi all, I am new here, and I think this is a great board.
Here's a few questions for all you veterans out there:

1. My car is stuck in Redding downtown, what can I do? What I mean is that I parked my car here to do some caravan runs, and by the time I came back I can no longer enter the area, period. I can go to the mine camps, I can go to the Wanaminago mine area, I can even go into the tunnels under the downtown area, but whenever I tried to enter the downtown itself through any means(front door, back door, underground), my game freezes or crashes. Anyone got any idea? I think I may have too much items in my trunk for the game to keep track of?

2. I restarted after that(from a 2 game yrs old save, arr.. :-( ), but I can't seem to get Mrs. Bishop to tell me she's from VC so I can get the pip upgrade, nor can I get the quest to kill Mr. Bishop from her. Is there anything specific you need, like a high perception or char. or int, or maybe better in bed? :)

3. I can't seem to get NCR to make a deal with the sqatters for some unknown reason. I killed the khans, but afterwards the mayor told me f**k off bec. they no longer have food and water, and Tandi won't speak to me. What the ...?

4. Do you have to be a Hub. for the Dave guy from Canada to ask you to ask Vikki for a date, so you can get the fuel? Also, for some reason I can't seem to get the science guy to ask me for a hardened powered armor(do you need it in your inv.?).

5. XLOE73, I can't seem to get this gun, I've tried killing all vagrants in the tanker but none of them seem to have it? Also, is the slaver/merchant guy with 3 or 4 guards suppose to sell you one(no, it's not Willie), since I am good, he won't do business with me, and killing him obviously didn't get me one.

6. This is something I am just curious about, is it possible to get the hubologist's treasure? I hacked into the mainframe, and it told me I can't figure out the coordinates, but I also hacked into the Shi's emperor mainframe, and it has the GPS sort of thing in it. Are they related? If so, how do I do it?

Any answers or suggestions about the questions will be greatly appreciated, thanx. :)

RE: Strange, specific questions, or pipe dreams?

1. That's a bug. The whole car thing is buggy as hell. So either don't get it or whenever you enter a city select the first part of the city you came in when you first entered the city. As to how to fix it. I have no clue (and this is comming from somebody who worked his way around a lot of them, like the caravan bug or the 'followers are not doing anything' bug, so that's saying something)

2. It has definatly something to do with how good you are in bed but if you have a high speech skill allready, she will not mention it to you. If she says "You are allready as smart as i want you to be" then you can forget about it. As for the quest to kill her husband, try the tree where you can ask about her husband and it should come up.

3. Have you done something bad in NCR. Have you killed the doctor in the vault aswell or any other innocent ? That might explain it.

4. Don't know. I always get my fuel from the Shi.

5. It's a rare weapon, a very rare weapon. Try traveling around San Fran without the car. Sometimes you'll get a random encounter with a caravan. One of them has it (but not always). The guards have combat armor so that's a way for you to recognize that caravan.

6. Never found it.

RE: Strange, specific questions, or pipe dreams?

I can only answer you the 4.
If you ask in the town for upgrade, you´ll be told that the scientist is the person to ask. when you find him, ask for upgrade and he´ll ask for 10.000 and power armor, he will rise it to hardened powerred armor (he has the material for two, and in this game there are only two). He only upgrades armor. After he upgrades all, start the killing, if you want, in the hub base.

RE: Strange, specific questions, or pipe dreams?

Thanks a lot JR.
Actually I've bump into the caravan problem many times, I don't know how much expensive equipment I lost bec. after the fight the caravan guys will no longer follow me and I'd have to reload. One time I was really ticked bec. I just finish the fight with some remants of Master's army and NCR's rangers(as you know, they carry good stuff and lots of it), and before I can kill the last mutant, the caravan leader said "Let's head out", so after I killed him, the man thought we were still in combat, and he won't leave.

I couldn't finish the game without my car bec. I had the NavCam parts in the trunk, arr...:(

As to question 3, No, I haven't done anything bad bec. I finish all other quests the hard way and my reputation in NCR was idolized. Do you need the holodisk she gave you or was there a conversational tree you needed to have? The aid keeps saying they no longer wants my service anymore, maybe it has something to do with the spy?

As to 5, I've bump into the caravan you spoke of, but for some reason(if I remembered correctly), she wouldn't trade with me.
Maybe bec. my karma was too high?Is there any other legal way to get it?

Thanks cama73, but I knew how to get the PA hardened, I was asking who and how to get the Shi scientist to ask me for the HPA, so I can get the fuel. You don't need to kill him to get the money back, you can just steal it.

But, cama73, you did remind me of another question/pipe dream I am curious about:

7. Does anyone know how to harden the Powered Armor yourself? I am supposing you could bec. of the chemistry journals and the T-51b repair manual. If you read the chemistry journals, it says the part about molecular chemistry was particularly interesting. If you put the 2 & 2 together, maybe you can?

I've encountered this bug as well (and I've seen it mentioned on the board in older posts), and it doesn't have anything to do with the car as far as I can tell. For me, this has happened on the SF downtown and Hubologist underground maps, and downtown Redding. I don't know if those are the only ones where it happens, but I've managed to go to other places (with the car) even when this bug prevented me from going to those places.

I believe the bug happens because somehow the save file for the specific map in question becomes seriously warped. You should, however, be able to get your car back. Delete the Redding downtown file, whatever it's called, and in its place bring in the corresponding file from a previous save. You should now be able to go there. Data on completed quests, who you've talked to, and - I assume - the location and contents of your car are not stored in the file you just junked... *but* the locations of critters and objects on the map are, so you may get weird results. For instance, when I had to revert sfchina.sav to a previous state, Lo Pan was standing in his house while his followers walked around bemoaning his death. Contents of stores will also reset to what they were in the previous save.

Hope this helps,

Per

PS. You can bemoan me a little if you want to - my cd unit broke down, and since naturally I have the Large install, I can't play Fallout 2 any more until I get it fixed or replaced. Oh well, taking my computer apart for the first time could be a rewarding experience, or something.

PPS. I get far too many Internal Server Errors on the board and on the NMA pages - about 50% of the time I click on something. No, wait, more.

RE: Strange, specific questions, or pipe dreams?

I´ll try to do that. thanks for the tip.

RE: Strange, specific questions, or pipe dreams?

The caravan bug has to do with how many good people get killed during a fight. If you encounter rangers fighting something else and to many of those rangers get killed the caravan stops for some reason. Only thing that you can do then is reload.

You have accessed the computer in the Khans base, right ? Look into your inventory and you should have a holodisk labeled as spy holodisk. If you have that everything should be fine.

The caravan master for the caravan with the XLE73 isn't a woman, it's a man.

and no you can't harden power armor yourself. Those journals are only their to keep you wandering if it might be possible.

Thanks, JR, for clearing the Powered Armor thing, they really should have clear up all the loose ends in the read me file or other official document. Like the quest to help make the kids in Den to have a brighter future intead a life in crime.(By est. a orphange run by Mama), or be a real wacko and try to launch the space shuttle(it'll blow up), or the quest to save the deathclaw from extinction(at least you saved 2 int. ones:) ), or to take over and establish a new crime family in New Reno(now it's a footnote in the ending), or really exposing Lynette as the real hypocrite she is and help Maclure become president thus turning them into a democracy, and exposing the conspiracy between the Lynette, Westin, Carlson, then help Tandi restablish law and order by getting rid of corrution inside, then create an alliance between all the major powers thus securing your village's future, it's really too bad( bad, interplay, bad ;-) ), bec. all the plot lines were hinted and a lot of the quest and characters were already there, and almost all the location were already done, I really wished they hadn't rush this game out the door, oh, well, more hope for FO3?

Actually, you mistook my point(pardon me for not being clear), this is the poop, the Whole poop:

What I meant was- I've already done the spy quest(by giving the holodisk to the Aide), but if you do that, you no longer have any conversational options left with the Aide or Tandi. I am guessing you don't need the NCR press holodisk she gave you? If not, then...? Is there a particular order you need to do this quest( among all the NCR ones)?

Anyway, I really appreciate all the help.

Happy Holloween, Everybody, I hope no whale crash in your back yard;-).

RE: Strange, specific questions, or pipe dreams?

If you have already given to spy holodisk to the aid then the quest is over and you can't do anything anymore. If you see an NCR flag hanging in front of the squatters house then it is done in the good way. Don't botter with their winning.

RE: Strange, specific questions, or pipe dreams?

Thanks Pr, for the help.

To tell you the truth, I've tried that before, but not without deadly results. Most of the time the game will just crash or refuse to load, or worse, sometimes I can actually get in the area but the game'll freeze(I'm usually stuck to a wall or something). Anyway, I usually avoid tempering with game data files bec. it just might corrupt the engine/data stream even more. I couldn't finish the game anyway bec. I need the NavCam computer parts to get the tanker going(why couldn't I just steal a Vertibird and fly there?), and it's in the trunk, arr..:(
So, have you gotten that CD-rom fixed yet? Good luck to you on the repairs. Cheers.:)
