The Geckonians dislike me intensly

I'm doing the Gecko quest and I'm a little confused.
Firstly I got into the power plant no problem got 3 keycards, got down as far as F and after he told me about VC I left and got attacked.
I reloaded and then spoke to H and L first. L told me about my ancestor and H told me about the part in VC, Then I couldn't even get near the plant without being attacked.
The common denominator seems to be talking to anybody about VC.
Is there a certain order I should progress through in order to not have to kill the Ghouls (I dont mind killing them but I play a good guy and I have 800 karma, I can afford to lose some but I'd prefer not to.

is your game patched ?

the patch removes the problem of ghouls randomly shooting at you in Gecko... in my games it mostly happened in the power plant - before patching of course.

My game isn't patched, I'm too far through to bother patching and start all over again, Am I screwed or is there a 'non-patch' solution ?

You're screwed. The only non patch solution that exist is that you have to be lucky or try sneaking in and out but it's difficult.

Then, is the mission crucial to the game? Like, can I finish the game without it ? If it is I'll just quit, I've started 'Tactics (patched :)) And I'm enjoying it so should I just continue with 'Tactics?

well...there are only a few quests you cannot do without in order to finish the game...and the Gecko one, just like the most of them, you can skip...
The only difference will be in the ending for Gecko (and also VC I think).

and imho you should certainly go on with FO2.

Could I ask then, If I killed all the Geckonians that are hostile and fix the plant, will it stop me becoming a citizen or will it just affect the ending, and probably my karma?

just remember that Lynette doesn't care very much about what will happen to the ghouls in Gecko...

No you are not screwed. After you patch the game use the save game converter. It converts your old saved games to the patch version. So there is no need to restart your game.

Thanks Doggedmeat, I'd searched through old posts here and everybody had heard of it but nobody knew where it was (It'd make a great RPG quest "Grass hopper, you must find the sacred savegame converter, or we are DOOOOMMMED!") :)

For anybody following this thread, The savegame converter doesn't work with the version 1.1 (which is what I have)
I guess I'm gonna go an' git me some Geckonians :)

You can do what I did, just move through the plant in combat mode, they never had time to initiate attack then. I did the same to sneak past bishop.
