[FO2] Weird colors when Installing/starting the game

First time out of the vault
Hello everyone :)

Ive been reading for over an hour on the forum now, and did some search but couldnt find my issue.

When I want to install the game see the colors right for just 1 second. After that it immediatly switches crazy: very pixelated and odd colors. I can install the game (humongeous) but when I start it the colors continu to be weird.

Im not really smart on computers, but figured it might be the resolution. My standard resolution is: 1366x768. Switching to lower resultions doesnt help either.

My laptop is fairly new (6 months), but I dont know the specs :( It has a wide screen.. could that be the problem??

Well.. hope this question isnt to ridiculous I just want to play FO2 in a normal game. I loved FO1..

greetz,
Kolaas

Is it like, crazy ugly bright colours, on some parts of the menu, on some shadows etc? I think I had the same problem on my Vista laptop too - happened with other older games like Starcraft 1 as well.

If you quit and start again, does the problem fix itself (at least for a while)? If you switch applications (alt+tab or Windows key) and then get back, does it also fix itself for a while?

I'd try running it in a different compatibility mode. I'm assuming you have Windows Vista, so try this:

1) Right-click the icon for the program (FALLOUT2.EXE)
2) Select 'Properties'
3) Click the 'Compatibility' tab
4) In the drop-down menu, select 'Windows XP' (or even 'Windows 98')

I could be completely wrong and it might not fix your problem. But it's a fast way to check and it will not mess up your game / system. It can also be set back the same way, so give it a shot.

well it did help me. I got windows7.

I tried Vista, and XP same problem. Now I tried windows 2000 and turned down the resolution a bit and now it works.

thanks!

uhmm I mean XP, not 2000.

And yes the colours where very ugly and pixelated. While installing I had the time to have a good look on it. It seems like there are only a limited nr of colors.

Yeah, whenever I have trouble running older games, I first try the compatibility mode and select a version of Windows that the game was intended for.

Glad you got it sorted! ;)

Same problem.

Tried everything you guys recommended nothing worked. I'm running windows 7 enterprise on an acer aspire 1640Z :?

I had similar problem I wasn't able to instal the game since the whole intal screen was blue or sometimes black and I saw nothing luckily I have an older machine here I installed fallout there copied it to a pendrive and transported to my new machine I just had to change the cfg files to tell the game where are the master dat, set the compatibility and start it.

Compatibility mode doesn't work. You need to download Sfall and set it up to remove the coloring issues.

Sfall comes bundled in pretty much every large mod put out and Killaps unofficial patch (I believe anyway), which you should be running even if you don't intend to mod. Have a dig in the modding forum for the links.

thanks for the help.

What alaso helped for me is:

Opening Screenresolution, DONT CHANGE ANYTHING, and run the porgram as an administrator. Now 50% of the times it runs with psychedelic colors, other times it doesnt.

I also installed Killap's unoficial patch. Dont know if that has Sfall. I thought it had the childrens patch too, but I still see invisible children. But thats ok with me.

You need to set up Sfall for it to work. Look in your fallout directory for ddraw.ini and open it.

Then look for

[Graphics]
;Set to 0 for 8 bit fullscreen
;Set to 4 for dx9 fullscreen
;Set to 5 for dx9 windowed
;A dx9 mode is required for any graphics related script extender functions to work (i.e. fullscreen shaders)
;Modes 1, 2 and 3 are no longer supported
Mode=0

Change the red zero to 4 or 5 based off if you want windowed mode or fullscreen.

It should work without the retarded colors now :)

Nope. Just make sure the game isn't running when you make the change =p

I have been having the same problem since I bought the re-release a few months ago. Can someone link directly to a site I can download the Sfall file?

I suggest using my unofficial patch, as sfall comes with it. If you also want new content (in addition to 1000+ bug fixes), go for the restoration project.

Every game has a different solution. C&C Red Alert works fine on my PC when I leave the Windows screen resolution setup menu thingie open. Starcraft works completely random, but it fixes the problem when I alt+tab to desktop and back.
Fallout 1 and 2 have excellent patches that fix the problem, though.
Get the restoration project, it's just amazing ^^
