[FO2] weird thing with the car, even apther applying patch

Neuromancer

First time out of the vault
after many years, i started to play Fallout 2 again.
first of all, im playing the game under linux (with wine of course), and i have the US version.
latest official patch is applied (1.02) as it shows up in the main menu.
(i know i should apply other patches too, but first i want to play the game unmodded)

currently im at level 9 and i have been to klamath, den, redding, modoc, and done most of the quests there.

i have the Fuel Cell REGULATOR from klamath's highwayman.

i finally got the money to buy the car from Smitty in Den.

in this game i never visited gecko, so obviously i dont have the Fuel Cell CONTROLLER.

but when i go to Smitty, i can buy the car from him directly (he tells that "heck i will even install the fuel cell controller for free"), and after that i get the working car, i can even get Smitty to install the Regulator right on spot.

this is very strange as ive read in per's guide:
In v1.0 you can get the car without having the part, though you still have to pay the $2000. Just ask Smitty what he does, then again about the car and you'll get the option to buy it. There's also a bug where if you leave the map on foot after getting the car, it disappears permanently, leaving the trunk.

i also tried that (to leave on foot) and the car disappeared, and only the trunk was left behind.

this is very weird, although it maybe because of the way linux handles upper/lowercase characters? (before and after applying the patch i ran a shell script that converts all file names to lower case in the current directory and all subdirectories)

the patchnotes also say the following:

-Get Car part quest should be clearing now.

i also experienced this bug too

Sounds like that may indeed be the case.

Are you sure that it worked? Did you run it on the patch files, too, before you copied them into the game directory? Otherwise it might have failed. If you have, say, xy.dat and XY.DAT and try to rename XY.DAT to xy.dat it won't work because the file already exists.

yes, i ran it on the patch files too, i just checked and every file in the fallout 2 folder (and subfolders) is lower-case except for the savegame directory, but save/load worked so far

I also had some issues when I played Fallout 2 on wine. It ran but I installed Killap's Restoration Project and some fixes didn't work. I couldn't work out why and how to fix it, so I had to resort to booting Windows to play. Too bad.

very strange.

i just checked my savegame files with the savegame converter and it says they are v1.02.

it seems to me as if isnt reading anything from the patch000.dat file, just uses the patched exe.

someone else experienced such problems?

thank you

ok im sure now something is messed up:

in the menu it says v1.02.

i go to the fallout 2 folder and delete the patch000.dat file.
run the game, still says its v1.02, and then i load a savegame and everything runs fine.

guess i have to go to windows to play the game...

Just for those who experience similar issues - F1 & F2 runs just as good in linux with wine as in windows, but to get it working that way, you have to follow "Ubuntu Linux Fallout 1 and 2 Install Guide (optimal performance)", which can be found here.
