Following NPCs on their paths

First time out of the vault
I'm about to pack up FO3 and wait for New Vegas, but the other day I freed the Pitt slaves in the wasteland (didn't bother doing the DLC this run). Two hours of sneaking around later, and I see two of them pass me running down the road. I spent around 30 real-life minutes following and protecting them, wondering if Bethesda'd been clever enough to script their destination as the Lincoln Memorial. Instead:

So not too interesting (they're right outside Vault 101), but it was fun following them, as I realized I'd never followed the road path before.

Have you ever followed an NPC (outcast, and so on) with any actual result or interesting experience on the way?

Isn't there a mission where you can follow a ghoul guy from the museum somewhere to find the old Power Armor?

That was a fucking pain in the neck - do I blindly follow him or do I stop and fight whatever it is that is currently attacking him (Enclave checkpoints)? Do I then stop to loot their bodies or sprint to catch up with the moron? He would always run through a highway full of wrecked cars, just in time to get shot by a raider with a nuke, obliterating everything in sight with a chain explosion... took me like 10 tries to get him through his little waypoint-based track unharmed.

If you're not in the same cell as him, you can just wait at the destination and they'll teleport wherever... or disappear if they don't have a destination..

What are they doing ? :?

Aaanyway - tried following some NPCs once, they got killed quite early on, I killed the attackers and went my way..

I think any of the NPC pathing that goes out into the wasteland tends to be pretty sketchy, not only due to all the rubble and junk that gets in the way but because of the all enemies that may attack during the trip. Sometimes the path just wasn't set that well either.
