i see it as 2 options

1) use a less compliant browser ( IE 6 or 7 )
2) use a more compliant browser ( opera )

I'm surprised this slipped through the Beta...

I'm certain it's on their list by now at least...

And no Wes, I don't feel like debating this one today, I'm too tired!

:P

don't think it 'slipped through beta' since i suspect it's not a browser problem.

Opera 9.5 is out too btw. lets just say that the interface is way better. but it still suffers from being a bit strict (some sites will not work with it or work badly with it).

suas:

the reason is that both IE and Fx have incomplete CSS or other "standards" compliance. so most web designers will favor browser compliance over standards compliance.

as long as a web designer ignores Fx and IE and focuses on completely being standards compliant, or simply not use those standards not supported in Fx or IE, then it may not display properly in opera.

due to the incomplete compliance in IE/Fx, when displayed in a fully compliant browser the pages wont work properly if at all.

its not a "bug" of opera, its a "feature" of the web page.

He didn't claim, nor do I believe he meant to imply, that it's a "bug" in Opera. Try reading his post again.

did not claim it was a css issue, it was an example. it must be a standards compliance issue.

either that, or its a corrupted font issue.

i do work at a company whose main business is development of web applications, so i'm quite aware of that. :)

and i think you misread what i said.

but anyway, regardless of any webdev's ethics, he'll have to support IE (in various incarnations) and firefox at the very least (or his business will drop dead). even if this means bypassing the actual industry standards used in Opera.
