Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Hello everyone.

Anyone here a fan of the highest class of auto racing in the world? I'm sure most of the yanks here find it all a bit too much complicated and boring (paradoxically, I know), but for the rest of the folks, anyone?

This year has been really great to watch. For me at least. There's one in many things I love about F1, and that's that you don't have to like any driver in the grid, any team in the paddock to enjoy a good race. You sit in front of the television, or you go the the track, and it's just there, the race is all, and the new rules and the new teams made F1 unpredictable like, I dare say, never before.

It is great for the sport in all aspects. For one, the show is in its highest for the common spectator. I don't know how many people have been following the season but I'd say it's way more than last year. And then seeing a new team in the front, better yet, new teams (Red Bull is new, more or less), that will surely help get some new teams into the sport next year, which is kind of a dire need...

Anyway, discussion topic.

And let me say Button is on fire. God is he quick. It's not only the car, he's fast and steady, awesome job. Props for Vettel too, great tallent, but lots to learn.

I've been following F1 since 2005. It started as some sort of hangover killer since I got up at about the time the race started :p perfect to watch for 2 hours while you wake up. Since then I've started watching all the qualifying sessions also.

Back then Raikkonen was amazing in the McLaren that always broke, and he was my favourite driver for some time, even though as you say you can really enjoy a race even if you don't cheer for one particular driver or team. I really enjoyed BMWs 2008 season, and Vettels sensational win at Monza. I think he has a lot going for him, and he's becoming sort of my new favourite.

This season is really interesting because the field is so close, and mixed up compared to the last several years of Ferarri/McLaren/Renault domination, and there seems to be a lot more overtaking so far. Some rule changes are pretty annoying to me, I don't know why they feel it's necessary to remove refueling for example, but overall it's good to shake things up a bit.

i used to be a huge fan of the sport, but i must admit that i haven't been following it at all for 2-3 years now. just lost the taste for it.

The reason is it's easier for the common viewer to understand why a car goes faster than another. Right now you have to take into account the fuel levels and the tire wear, next year it's just the tire wear, and it makes everything more "balanced".

I'm personally very ok with the change: it means basically less time spent on the pits and more fights and overtaking.

I heard that there would be fewer cars competing this season.
20, as last year.

While I'm all for more overtaking on the track and less in the pits, I wonder how this will affect circuits like Monaco. The race could potentially be won in qualifying, if the leader isn't a lot slower than the car behind later in the race for some reason, or makes a mistake... If it's still necessary to change tires it changes the matter of course.

Well, refueling is out, now that's for sure, but tires are probably gonna need to be changed. There are no words about changes to the rule that states that a car has to use both compounds available for each race.

Alonso is still my favourite driver, and it's going to be cool seeing him in a Ferrari in the near future. This season has been awesome, although all the politics turned me off for a while. I really do hate that most races are won in qualifying, so taking refueling out for next year is only going to make that more likely, imo, since they still have to stop for tires.

Button has always been a great driver to watch, he never had the equipment to show it off though, and I'm glad he's getting the chance. He deserves it. Vettel is a great driver, but there are still too many mistakes, just like Hamilton. I'd like to see Rosberg in a car that can match his pace. Next season should be even better than this one.

I've always detested racing; it's a grievous waste of fuel. You just zip around a track...burning fuel. Burning tires. Seems really silly.

What ever became of that split up I heard about a few months ago?

This logic basically means any sport is a waste.

Hockey is a waste of water (turning it into ice and watching it melt / evaporate).

Football is a waste of grass on the pitch.

Etc, etc.. for me, it's a form of escapism. I deal with all kinds of shit in real life, but every second Sunday, for a couple of hours, I can enjoy myself and not think about "real life" for a bit. If that constitutes a "waste of fuel" then, waste away guys.

I support F1 racing for the slight chance that in the near future, it will evolve into F-Max racing.

From there, it's only one step to becoming F-Zero racing.

Then I can live my dream of FALCON PUNCH!

Hockey only matters to you because you're Canadian.

There's lots Americans here, so your reference to football will make their brains explode, as it's not "football"

Also, at least F1 isn't compromised of following the car in front of you for 798 left hand turns so that you can make your move on those final 2 left hand turns for the lead and the race win. F1 drivers are said to be the fittest athletes because driving a 750hp go-kart that produces 5 lateral G isn't an easy task.

PS: Anyone else happy to see Hamilton have that pit screw up? I know I enjoyed all 5 seconds of it. Made my day actually.

Does it matter? Both sports are usually performed on a grass pitch, no?

Yes. He is hard to like. Rubens on the other hand is always so overjoyed when winning, it's hard to be disappointed when he does, even if he beats your favourite driver to the chequered flag. I'd love to see Vettel and Rosberg in better cars, even though I guess Vettel is already in a pretty good car.

Spa this weekend! I'm giddy with excitement.

I used to watch it quite frequently, especially since my dad did so.

But every time I did, I noticed how much time I was wasting by looking at cars doing absolutely nothing interesting at all. The biggest part of the race, nothing happens. Then there were the few gems of brilliant overtaking, like when, I think it was Schumacher, once got back from something like 15th position to first. But usually, it's like watching a carousel.

I'm so glad Spa is back. It's my 2nd favourite race track (behind Suzuka).

Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are both a couple of goofs who deserve to lose, week after week :).

An educated guess says that you were pretty happy with the outcome of the race, then? ;)

I find it amusing how a lot of people speculate who's going where in 2010, specifically that Kimi has "lost it" and that he should be replaced at Ferrari (by Alonso) because Massa outperformed him last season. He's going to Rally blablabla. It doesn't seem to matter what he does to some people, even winning races and scoring podiums won't change their mind.

My favourite stupid analysis of his abilities:
Kimis win in Spa isn't convincing because he didn't beat Fisi by enough of a margin, if Massa had raced he would have won more easily.

Well well, I found the race really exciting anyway. I hope Vettel can catch up to Button in the standings to make the end of the season more interesting.

I seldomly watch it, though i'm not really a big fan mostly because of all the rules, regulations and restrictions. I wish car racing would be more varied and unpredictable like in the 30'-60'....
