FoT: Campaign.txt

Tsunami

First time out of the vault
Hi folks, I'm interested in changing around the campaign.txt file. Or rather: I already did that and want to know how to make the changes carry over into the game. Browsed the archive but found nothing substantial, so I have to ask here.

Neither putting the modified .txt into the tables folder nor re-compressing it to the enteties_0.bos file showed any change. Even started a new campaign, but still no banana.
Is there a specific parameter to make the game read the txt files?

I cannot figure out the -path command correctly. Changed some entities and ran the -path command to the appropriate folder, both direct and keeping the original file structure (core\entities\...) but it did not seem to have any effect.

I figured txt editing would be similar to D2's mpqs and their content, but this is obviously not the case.

Please note that I am using a German version of FoT; there is no 1.27 for that (and no editor), so I am really stuck with basic txt editing.

The problem with the txt file COULD be that its contents are stored directly in the mission files for the German version, but it would not make any sense (file structure?) because the translation files are just tables and the sound files.

Any help would be really appreciated.

(edit: Added about German version, changed title to refer to FoT.)

Oh well, I thought it was a basic enough question and did not want to bother the code wizards. :)
I'll ask a mod to move it to the hacking & editing board.

Changing the campaign text will require the 1.27 patch and the editors, sorry. Once you change the txt file you'd need to leave it unpacked and then update the campaign file (bos.cam) using the campaign section of the editor.

Without the editors there's not a real lot you can change by altering the text files, any changes to the recruit pool or the quartermaster's stock etc. will need to be updated to the campaign file.

I'm quite sure there are ways to use the English 1.27 patch over the german one without much problems... The only real problem would be updated .txt files which contain english text which would need to be re-translated into german (basically take the original german file and translate any new lines added by the patch -- and that's only if there are any new text files).

Everything else should be exactly the same. Ok, there migt be other issues if they included sound files, but as far as I recall they didn't.

Well, that's unfortunate, but thanks for the replies since I know can stop trying. :)

I downloaded the patch long ago, but it will not work with my version of the game and I cannot access the files IN the patch file via Resource Hacker.
I do not worry about screen texts etc.; the translation took place in the tables folder's txt files; every update there could be compensated.

I now wonder how the patch determines if it can apply to the version of FoT installed. If it is done via checksum or bos.exe's size or something like that, I see little chance for tricking the patch. If it is done simply with a flag in one of the cfgs, it will be easy. Have to check that one out, because apart from the txts in \tables and the missions and the speech files, there are not any differences.

The problem solved itself; in a very weird an unexpected way. I simply tried (again) to install the patch, and it WORKED. It struck me as odd, since clearly remember it did not before (no booze involved).

But the I figured out.
I got a new HDD lately, and due to its partitions etc. most drives encountered a letter change; the one FoT was on, too. When I ran the uninstaller (after the switch) the uninstall could not be completed (in pointed to the wrong drive). Simply re-installed, and at the end of the procedure, I got the message that the uninstall program failed to initialize and that I would not be able to properly remove the application. Since I (mostly) know my way around in Windows, I ignored it. Same happened with the German 1.25 and then the English 1.27.

My guess is that all this drive switching prevented the game from correctly reading from the registry.

Wee, now I am happy. :D

The patch looks in the registry for the uninstallation path. It countains a string which has the location of FOT. It then looks to see if BOS.EXE exists in the directory (regardless of file size or CRC...) if so, it proceeds to install the patch.

That's how I managed to get the editor working on the demo version of the game (and also installed the "3rd CD patch" they made a while back. I can make entities with the vehicles included in it).

Of course now a nameless version gave me all the .BOS files so I could test all the files in my viewer, as well as the CAM file. Basically all I'm missing are the movies, voices and music, but my point wasn'T to have the game but have all the files to make sure my viewer works :P

Need help editing quartermaster lists

I am having some difficulty accessing the quartermaster lists in fallout tactics. I would like to be able to edit the lists in the game. I was hoping that somebody would be able to post a easy, step by step way, that I could use to access and edit these list. I am very new at this modding stuff. I am at a loss when I open the editor. I have read through the readme but have not been able to get helpful information out of it. Help would be deeply appreciated. :x

Fallout Editor/Map building
This forum is for the discussion of map building using the Fallout 2 editor/Mapper (by Dims) and the Fallout Tactics editors..

...so i moved this to this forum, and welcome, hope you can get some help.

They should be in a text file, I can't remember off-hand which one. But any changes to it must be reloaded into the bos.cam file using the campaign editor.
