I finally found the name of that vertical arcade shooter with six buttons. It is much older than I once supposed (1993), and the the graphics worse than I remember it, but, it is the same game: "Daioh" (http://www.klov.com/D/Daioh.html)
Currently work is being done on Daioh for the MAME project, so I may be able to play that game again before long. http://www.mame.net/wip0208.html
