FRMs with multiple frames - How do I convert to/from them?

Wild_qwerty

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Is there anyway of making FRMs with multiple frames - either for new critters and objects that are animated (lights flashing etc...)

I've got all the frames I need for a new model (BMP) but am unable to pack them into a FRM file.

Any ideas?

Well I remember having done something with animated gif's and then converting them... I just can't remember how... I know I never finished it because it was to hard to do...

Hope someone else will be able to help... Good luck !

Btw: Try searching Google for: GIF2FRM Converter, or Frame file converter...

Yes, try FRM workshop.

Also all your bitmaps will have to be in 8-bit indexed colour format, using the fallout palette.

If you need any help send me a private message.

They are going to be ripped from another DOS game so the colours should be fine, and I've got to change the background from green to black so I'll load the correct palate at the same time. So far its worked with the secenery

More Help Please

I've got the process streamlined now and can make a new piece of scenery in a couple of minutes from start to finish.
The problem is in converting it into a FRM. If I use BMP2FRM I need the header *.ini, and FRM header maker isnt working. I have been saving them as GIFs and using GIF2FRM (no header required!) but the background changes from black to a dark grey, and I imagine losses its transperency. The only way that works is to convert an existing FRM into a BMP and paste the new image over the top and then convert it back into a FRM using BMP2FRM.

I am loading the correct pallete, and the black has been "picked up" from and existing FRM so that it is the correct colour.

The problem is finding an existing FRM that is approximately the same size.

Note to mappers: can you mark any additional transperent space around and object as un-blocked (can be walked on)

Critter Maps

Ignore that last mesage, I've got that part sussed now. And can sucessfuly import scenery items.

Has anyone done anything with critters? If so could you please send me any notes you may have as it would save me lots of time.
A 'Map' of what each letter is would be great.
Below is what I have figured out

Each Critter consists of multiple FRMs one for each action/weapon combination.

Each FRM consists of 6 files (GIFs for example) for the same action, one for each direction of the hex. This is signified by the compass direction.

spriteab_e - east
spriteab_ne - north east
spriteab_nw - north west
spriteab_w - west
spriteab_sw - south west
spriteab_se - south east

The two letters procedding the underscore each signify a different action/weapon. And 'sprite' is the name of the critter.

where sprite = sprite name
letter 1 = Weapon
letter 2 = Action number

for example for the first letter d = knife
and for the second b = walk forward

so db_w = walk forward with knife in a westerly direction.

What I'm after is a 'map' of all these different letters for both weapons (smaller list) and all of the actions (bigger list).

It would save me lots of time if someone has already done this, or would like too. (You will need to unpack the critter.dat file and view the FRMs)

Thanks

Hey... let us see some screenshots on what you're working at... it might be interesting for the modding community :D

So far I'm using Image Alchmey with the bmp2frm 'plugin' from the Team-X site.

Though I have had to modifiy the batch file not to load the palette, as I've done that manually in Pain Shop Pro, and they looked nasty in once it tryed to load the other palette.

I still cant find FRM workshop anywhere

is FRM Workshop the full name... cause then I probebly have ways of finding it...

give me the correct name of the program and I'll see what I can do

Ok, now it saying that the MSCOREE.DLL is missing. Do I need to download this seperatly? Im running Win98SE, I'll try on my work PC tommorow.

Also when trying to use GIF2FRM it changes the background 'Black' into a grey. but it also 'jumps' the images up and down Ive tried fiddling with the y axis but cant seem to get it set right.

If only it were easier :?

Filedescription: Microsoft .NET Runtime Execution Engine, v. 1.0.3705.0

Looks like I found my problem. I have to download MS .NET software onto my PC. Call me sceptical but I've seen the .Net thingie break a couple of PCs at work (or was it the security update for .NET).

OK, Ive got FRM work shop going now (Nice program).
The problem is now that the FRM has wholes all through it. This is due to their being the black that gets marked as 'clear' within FRMs/Fallout. Seeing as I have imported the sprites origanly had a green background which I coloured to the correct black. So if a go back to the originals and change all the black to grey first and then all the green to black I will be OK.

What Im looking for now is some sort of batch colour repalcing tool. Something that can repalce all of one colour with a different colour, rather than manauly changing every different patch of colour.

OK, Im just about there guys, thanks for all the help so far. Just one last thing - Hopefuly.
When using FRM workshop what is the starting position that the critter faces, and what direction does it spin (clockwise or counter clockwise).

If not I'll just do it by trial and error.

I though I had it this time, but yet another problem.

After I've made the test FRM up and open them with Advanced FRM viewer it crashes with a ilegal operation, also I can open them with the normal FRM viewer, but also crashes becuase it doesnt seem to like multi-Frame FRMs - But I can see the FRM playing in behind the error message

Any ideas here guys? Or Is it just my computer
