FT steam version in 2015 -- Is online multiplayer even possible?

First time out of the vault
Hi folks. I already posted this over on the Steam community hub for FT, but I don't think there's a whole lot of traffic over there. I would greatly appreciate any information anyone could give me. Just copy-pasting the info I put on the Steam forum:

My friend and I both bought the Steam version of this game and played it over LAN just fine. I've scoured the internet trying to find any method to set up the game for online play and nothing seems to work.

We downloaded Hamachi, didn't work.
We tried Gameranger, didn't work.
Set up port forwarding for the game and tried to let him enter the IP (in xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx format, no port defined [maybe a problem?]) and that didn't work.
We read on the FT multiplayer page from the fallout wikia that Steam had servers, but from all I can tell, they're no longer in existence (although I may be wrong about that).

Does the Steam version of this game even allow for online multiplayer gaming? Or does one of the above methods work and I'm just not doing them right?

Thanks in advance for any responses, even if it's just confirming that it won't work.

I almost never played only with FoT, but IMO, the problem isn't steam related.
The versions of Fo1-Fo2-FoT that are on steam aren't much different than the original, patched & modded.
Steam doesn't even act as a DRM. You can copy-paste the game folder anywhere, even on computers that don't have steam and they would still work.

Hello,
Fot works just fine on the net. The real problem is that the community is dead, and even if Fot is still the best multiplayer game ever made, people prefer playing some other more new games. You can either forward ports for fot on your router or using Gay Ranger should work just fine, that was our last option. We still play sometimes for fun (one week per year)! The community made great mods, like cooperative, rpg maps etc, etc...
