game closing down with error

When playing fot I can play for a while, but i then the game closes and i am in windows with an error message :

bos caused an invalid page fault in bos.exe the application has been terminated, similar things happen with other games too eg black & white (even worse , i cant even plat it cos of this fault)

I have tried reinstalling, even formatting my HD to no vail here are my specs:

P111 500
128mb ram
16mb ati rage 128 xpert video card
sound blaster 128pci
dx8.0a
 
I have the same same problem using Win98. I also Run tactics on the same system with Windows 2000 and it works perfectly. I have a feeling that directx 8a is the cause of the problem. Lots of games started acting quirky after I installed Dx8...

The bos page fault is and I quote "Thats a known problem we are trying to find" unquote, from Karl Burdack lead programmer of FOT.
