Water Chip? Been There, Done That
Modder
Do any of you guys know any decent game engines that are free to use/cheap subscription ? I thinking about making a game and I need to find a decent game engine. I don't have that much experience but have certain got some through fallout modding ect. I downloaded unity and arn't sure whether to countinue with learning that or change to enough engine. I'd like any suggestions. I really don't what to use atm. It won't be a massive project so anything that has free assests or is easy to work with would be cool

Thanks charlie

As far as I know, Unity and Unreal are the go to at the moment. Unity has a free version and I believe Unreal's full version is free, which has a condition for payment after you make a game and sell a certain amount.

I used Unity back in version 4 which I liked quite a bit, allows you to do quite a bit with very little. Never played with Unreal but I downloaded it on my last computer so there's that. If you are feeling especially ambitious I believe Blender (yes, the model making tool) has a built in game making software, though I am not sure it still has that as I haven't touched it for years.

All engines are free, or almost free. Unity has personal version, Unreal is free until you sell the game, CryEngine is fully free (but asks for donations) and Lumberyard (based on CryEngine) is fully free unless you use Amazon services.

Will defo check out cryengine i am interesting in making 2D game perhaps but i dunno yet

It would be helpful to know as many details about the game you want to make as possible...

Also, what programming languages are you familiar with?

Unity is definitely a very popular engine these days with indie developers, there's lots of assets for it, but from what I understand works better for 3D games. You can make a 2D game with it of course but may run into more issues.

Also are you hoping to make something that you can sell or is this just for fun / getting experience? If it's the latter, you may want to try just making a mod of an existing game. Temple of Elemental Evil maybe :) Or if you want a more modern setting, HBS' Shadowrun games come with a relatively user friendly level editor.

Then you wouldn't really have to worry about assets and can just concentrate on making a game. Of course modding has it's own challenges and limitations but at least you can make something that people can playtest almost immediately and get feedback and experience designing something.

I am not too familiar with games but want to make something simple I could possibley sell, I just want to have that option viable. I've getting plenty of modding with my mods i make for FO3 FNV and skyrim. The only trouble now is how much working i'm puting in i'd love to be able to release it for money ect. I'm not fan of making money ect but would be nice to say i made my own game that could give me some income. But yeah it would still just kinda be for fun however I could just continue moding ect So yeah i would like something like unreal where you pay 5% for what you sell it for ect. However I can afford to buy any assests so yeah thats abit of a problem
