Game worked fine for awhile, froze, and now it won't load

First time out of the vault
Edit: Forgot to mention, this is Fallout 1 I'm talking about
Yes I searched.

I use Windows XP Pro sp2, Pentium 4 3.2GHz, 2 GB RAM, Nvidia 8600 GT, Soundblaster X-Fi.

I did the small installation, patched w/ TeamX 1.2, then TeamX 1.3.3, and started playing. Everything worked fine except for the occasional screen blackout. I searched and found the sfall engine tweak mod by Timeslip, and installed that, which helped reduce blackouts. Then I disabled anti-virus and other background programs, which helped even more.

The game was running smoothly and very playable until I got to Junktown, I went down the ladder in Dr. Morbid's place and the game froze up, I had to reboot.

Now it won't load at all, I get the "Please stand by" screen, then it crashes to desktop. I uninstalled/reinstalled, and now I get nothing, screen goes black for a minute and then back to desktop. I've tried installing without the mod and patches and I get the same thing.

Any clue what happened? I'm baffled because it was working perfectly and now it won't even load with a fresh install, and I've changed nothing else on my PC.

But you didn't read the stickies or forum descriptions.

Edit: Moving this to modding for now, in case the TeamX people know anything about the problem. I believe that patch alters scripts in Doc Morbid's lair.
