no, i wont pester you with some tl;dr texts copypastad from some pseudointellectual <strike>attentionwhoring</strike> culture homepages. no better place than nma to share some ideas about how computer games steadily substituted movies and music when it comes to: what influences your thoughts about pop-or subcultural memes and themes more or most?
i love movies, and i love music. i mean, the whole bandwidth of available, 'good' stuff there is - ranging from kurosawa and barber shop to no country for old men and IDM . with friends and partners, i mostly talk about movies, or theatre, and music. but, at the end of the day, the cultural artifacts which influenced me most are very clearly: computer games. i may not be as smart as the other guy, but i do have an inkling that computer games have a LOT more infuence on what goes on in culture than everybody wants to admit.
a small example for this? ive always been a great admirer and listener to bebop jazz, especially the early miles davis and bill evans (the pianist, not the sax guy). i NEVER found that the at that time way more popular "swing jazz" or however you wanna call it was in any way interesting to listen to. guess what changed this? correct - fallout 1 and 2 intro. especially that god darned "kiss to build a dream on". what a great song, what a grand era of musicians who totally had escaped my attention until that time. simple example, but somewhat astounding when you think anout it. it was just a REFERENCE, and that managed to influence my music taste in quite a degree. and, when it comes to telling a good story... system shock 2 beats EVERY survival/horror movie i have seen up til now.
id like to know what games have influenced you, in what particular way, and how you value those impacts in comparison to the impact of music, movies and literature.
edit: DONT DIE ON ME LITTLE THREAD! - *cough* tell my wife *wheeze* i love her - DAM YOULL TELL HER YOURSELF! - *** - THREAD? THREAAAAAD! OH NO!
