Games getting more complex?

BloodyPuppy

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
Alright so it seems that the general consensus on these boards is that games are being dumbed down for a wider audience, but are there any companies, series, or individual games that you feel are making games that are more complex or at least targeting a niche audience?

I would have to say that Arc Systems and the Guilty Gear series has definitely just been an ongoing effort to refine the series and make a more balanced and deep fighting game. I'd say that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. isn't sacrificing it's unforgiving difficulty for a wider fanbase either. Diablo 3, while maybe not being made more complex, is definitely staying true to it's roots, stupid comments about "2 much colar!11!" notwithstanding.

Any others?

Paradox Interactive makes games for hardcore strategy gamers, which is nice.

I'd also argue that Polyphony's Gran Turismo series is for driving fans only, as it's the furthest thing from an arcade racer around.

There are sill niche games, they're just harder to find.

Yeah, I just heard about Paradox from this board. I'm looking forward to trying out Europa Universallis 3, and Combat Mission.

I'd say hard-core flight sims are still pretty complex. The people who play those things seem to be fanatics for technical accuracy.

The Combat Mission games are definitely complex - too complex to be rewarding for players with short attention spans.

You wouldn't be trying to insinuate something about my attention span would you?

I kid though I kid. Yeah, it seems like flight sims would have to be complex since the target audience is already pretty small, and anything less than complete accuracy would no doubt alienate them.
