Gamespy is closing down.

It sucks, but I'm more concerned about Arcade/Comrade. Does that mean the multiplayer component of dozens of old games will end up nuked?

The site was.. okay lately? At least judging from the article coverage I read. Sad news for everyone working there obviously, but selfishly speaking, it won't affect me.

And nothing of value was lost. Only bad thing is that some people lost their jobs, this always sucks.

It looks like a lot of them will be going to IGN, which is now part of the Ziff Davis umbrella.

Looks like the same thing is happening at IGN and UGO, these things are pretty typical when sales and mergers happen:

In a sense, yes. But there are always those virtual-LAN programs (Hamachi, etc) and related comunities around their use on a specific game.

If you want to play Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, for example, you won't have Gamespy's lob, chat and matchmaking anymore, but you can install Hamachi, look for a DoW-Hamachi community and add some people for a bunch of games.

Well shit, I actually liked the 1-UP team.

They had great podcasts & such I listened to often way back in 2006.

Gamespy was okay, although I only used them for their old Quakespy.

Kudos to both sites.

I am surprised anyone here has sympathy for the large mainstream "games journalism" sites. These guys may be entertaining in some senses but they are paid shills with very little integrity as critics, much less critical thinkers.
The huge difference between gamespy and other mainstream sites is that they actually covered niche and indie games, questioned the publishers as well as the gaming market and community, and from time to time published some well made articles.
