When Todd Howard took the stage at Bethesda’s first E3 press conference in June 2015, the atmosphere was electric. Fallout 4 had just been announced, and Howard was about to show it to press and a worldwide audience of fans via livestream.

Fallout 4 is only the latest ambitious role-playing game led by Howard, who has been with with Bethesda since 1994. At GDC this year, his contributions to the industry will be honored with a lifetime achievement award.

Since his first design credit at the studio working on The Terminator: Future Shock (also the first PC 3D shooter with mouse look), he went on to play an integral role in The Elder Scrolls franchise. Howard holds the rare distinction of developing three consecutive game of the year winners in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fallout 3, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

This honor was chosen by an advisory committee including Julien Merceron (Bandai Namco and formerly of Konami), John Vechey (Pluto VR and Popcap co-founder), Bob Rafei (Big Red Button), and Caryl Shaw (Telltale). The award will be presented on Wednesday, March 16, at 6:30 p.m. during the GDC Awards.

I have liked [more or less] most of what Todd has put his hands on over the years, software-wise, but Fallout 4 really pissed me off. I shouldn't say anymore or I'll just make myself angry.

I'm on the fence in regards to whether or not Todd deserves getting a lifetime achievement award, at this point in time [so soon after FO4 trips and breaks its pretty face].

Then again, the awards could just be a sympathetic farce. Just like the Oscars! :P

I guess it's a lifetime achievement to ruin two franchises and make millions doing so.

It's like giving G.Lucas an award when the prequels came out (in a parallel world) its still "him" (and probably all of the unnamed people at Beth that do the actual work) but... now??

Peter Molyneux won the GDC Lifetime Achievement award in 2011. Richard Garriott won it in 2006. Yeah.

I thought that award was more about the impact one has made on the gaming industry, not about influence, or quality, or copies sold. I would say Todd Howard has made an impact, yes. Whether a good impact or a bad impact I will leave you all to discuss yourselves.
