German Magazine "PC Action" reviews FO3.

First time out of the vault
so, being a subscriber i am lucky to receive this magazine 2 to 3 days before it hits the shelves. it is one of the "big three" of german pc-gaming magazines. (and IMHO the best of them all, since they do not care about political correctness and have at least 4 pairs of boobs in every issue)

i just got the new issue and they gave fo3 a whopping 90%, while expressing that it were a strong candidate for "game of the year". now keep in mind, that this magazine is action-oriented, hence the name, so they focus on that aspect of the game.

no online version yet, so i will give a short conclusion.

good: atmosphere (the tutorial being specifically mentioned), quests, detail

bad: inventory has a kind of "console"-feel to it (-1%), player character is moving too slow ( ? )(-1%), dungeon-crawl-element is repetitive and bleak (-2%), dreary environment (yeah right, -2%), usage of the pip-boy too complex, i.e. no shortcuts to certain functions (-4%)

the whole 6-page review is filled with praise and how beth managed to capture the look and feel of the original games and convert it to 3D. they kept comparing it to oblivion and how fo3 does everything better. moral implications are to be expected at every quest. they also like the fatman and VATS, saying that it makes combat significantly easier.

sidenote: game runs silky smooth with all details enabled on a 2.6ghz quadcore, 4gb ram and 9800gt in 1600x1200 resolution.

God I'd hope so. We're not talking about Crysis here. I imagine it would be fairly demanding, but not a you-must-upgrade kind of graphical showcase.

How can they praise the look and feel of the game while still marking points for too bleak and dreary environments. I hope Fallout 3 gets the cities right. I always liked how much they contrasted with the desert wasteland. "There is much life in this desert oasis" shows up in the dialogue box when you enter the Hub. That said, I don't really think that any of the cities were really bleak in F1 or 2, so I hope Beth doesn't screw up the warm glow that cities made you feel.

PC Action is a yellow press magazine. As long as shit blows up, it will get a good review. (boobs?? That marks a good game magazine?)

while the editors focus more on action-oriented games than others and aren't dead serious about themselves, the magazine is in no way "yellow press". they are usually dead on when it comes to games. they gave the original STALKER massive penalties for being so buggy IIRC. and PES '09 recieved 91%. few explosions there.

and the boobs just underline their focus on adults. that and the fact that they ridicule dumbass LTEs defines the magazine, in that it is neither for kids (like the GameStar) or for people without humor (like the PC Games). besides, the PCA is the oldest magazine out of the big three.

How does the whole "insultes first journalist", as seen on the main page, fit into your definition?? Adults can watch porn, if they want to see boobs or actually have sex, it is the adolescent loosers they are targeting.

well, the answer to that is actually in the magazine itself, right where they explain their rating system: "...of course, humourless sticklers do not like that...". one can write an objective article AND be funny at the same time you know?
besides, there might be a slim possibility that the second reviewer just wanted to inform the reader that the first reviewer might not have been 100% objective this time. but that is just a wild guess

As i already mentioned in other topic, i dont believe any reviewers that gave Oblivion more that 80% and then call it the best RPG in years.

Well, when Oblivion came out, maybe it was the best RPG of this year. It was in 2006 and I can not remember any RPG from this year that I have played - besides Oblivion.

Final Fantasy XII came out in 2006, and blew Oblivion away, IMO.

Both Gothic 3 and NWN2 were released the same year, in my opinion both games are better then Oblivion and that says a lot since both were disappointing. Also in the review it says in LAST FEW years not in that year and if you take that in account you can find more better RPG released in that time.

[spoiler:45923aedce]They didn't get the cities right somewhat. In a few choice locations they added some art-deco statues, but the prevalent man-face at the corner of most buildings and the atlas shrugged motif of a man holding up corners of buildings was conspicuously absent.

The absence of rain in the game is HIGHLY peculiar. Thunderstorms would have been so beautiful. [/spoiler:45923aedce]
