Good military aircraft simulator

Are there any new games in that genre out for the PC, with next-gen graphics? I really liked Sturmovik for it's realism and accuracy, but I found it lacked in the story and atmosphere department. I want something fun and with a decent storyline, but also realism. I liked Ace combat 6 for the 360, but it was a little too arcade for me. I'm mainly looking for 1960s-contemporary, but anything will do, really.

Seems the whole flightsim genre has collapsed and died.

It doesn't even HAVE to be military, strictly speaking. I just want a game with well-written missions. I've checked out both X-plane 9.0 and Microsoft Flight Simulator X. I guess they're both good and realistic, but are they engaging?

Again, realism is the most important, graphics come second. I might want to design planes one day, want to get some basics on how they work (X-plane would be best suited for this, I suppose).

You want realism AND story? Sorry, but nobody makes flight games like that. It's either simulation or arcade.

If you want a decent simulator with more or less modern graphics and a contemporary setting, try Lock On: Modern Air Combat. If you like choppers, Enemy Engaged 1 or 2.

New? There is not much new in the realm of flight simulations, especially combat based.
And as far as story goes, the definition of good "story" in a flight simulation game is the randomization of enemy positioning and the improvisation of AI pilots, dynamic mission structures and the like.

Since the greatest flight simulator games are historically based, that's what you're going to get. As far as atmosphere goes, Falcon 4.0 is fantastic, and the realism settings on their highest are practically the real thing, it took me at least fourteen tries my first time through on the highest realism settings to land the damn thing without my landing gear snapping off. The game was released in 1998 however.

Damn, I forgot Falcon 4.0. That's definitely recommended if you want realism. The dynamic mission structure is a big bonus, which is also used in Enemy Engaged. Even though Falcon 4.0 was made in 1998, there's an updated version called Allied Force. There are also a ton of mods, among them better res textures.

Oh, and if you like choppers, also look out for Black Shark, which should be out...when it's out (http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com). There's also a flightsim set during the Falklands war in the making, which is going to have a dynamic campaign.

The only games my father plays these days are realistic flight sims (have always been his favorite) and he really liked Falcon 4.0 (which was already mentioned) and Combat Flight Simulator 2 (which is part of a trilogy), the latter of which he seemed to have more fun with, though I'm sure that's a preference thing. I'm more of an arcade shooter fan myself, though I do enjoy the sims from time to time.

I'm going to play Attack on Pearl Harbor to get the mission and story. It really lacks realism though so I'll compensate by playing Microsoft flight Simulator X or X-plane 9.0. Do you think a joystick is enough to play these two games? I'd get a rudder and throttle thing but I'm left-handed, so it's kinda worthless.

Falcon 4.0 and Enemy engaged look pretty cool, I'll check them out some time.

That falklands war game and Black shark seem interesting, I'll keep an eye out for them.

I wouldn't doubt it, but you're most likely going to have to make use of the keyboard as well, unless you spent good money on a decent flightstick.

Crimson Skies! Best.Game.Ever.
No realism
No physics
Awesome story
Awesome character
FUN! (you get to fly through the O in the hollywood sign)

Ace Combat is an awesome series. I don't know which ones are for PC though, if any.

You should check this one:

the most realistic chopter sim. It wasreleased in Russia and soon in rest of Europe. I have a russian original copy (you can change the language) and It's amazing. 380 manual pages.

From the same team, check Lock On Gold (Lock On + Flamming Cliffs).

Also, you can try Falcon 4 Allied Force, graphics a bit old, but greta in realism.

And IL2 1946, the superb sim from WW2. One of the best sims I have played. Still good graphics.

This Black Shark looks a bit like Operation Flashpoint to me.

Uh, no. It's a simulator. And I didn't know the Russian version was already out. Estonian fuckers don't seem to import the newest Russian games either
