Graphic issues with Fallout 2 on Windows Vista

First time out of the vault
Ive recently installed Fallout 2 on Vista, after some problems with patching (now fixed thanks to NMA forums) i'm having problems with in-game Videos, and random images have pixelated color distortions.

Just wondering if anyone else on vista has had the same or similar issues? Ive tried it on my new 20" LCD and my old 17" CRT and they both do the same thing. Also tried re-installing. It did it before and after i installed the patch.

I have the most updated drivers for my Nvidia 8800 GTS.

The game is pretty much playable, but is quite annoying. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks

i have the same problem running VISTA 64 bit and GTX 8800 fallout 1 plays fine however 2 crashes at the starting video. If you find a fix let me know.

Solution of the graphic problem on Vista

Hi there, problem of disorted colors in F2 has simple solution.

Just go to directory, where has been installed your F2, find fallout2.exe and display atributes. Second tab is 'compatibility'. Let run the program in compatibility mode: 'XP SP2' and check the option of '256 color mode'. Than hit OK and enjoy playing F2 under Vista. :D

Ok after a few days of messing around and testing i installed fallout one and patched it. Had the exact same issue, however after playing around with WIN 95 compatibility mode and different resolution i came to realise that the pixelated graphic issue is just a random occurance.

Even with compatibility mode removed and everything else as standard, sometimes when i open the game it works fine, other times it doesn't.

As much as im happy i can play them both now properly, it still bugs me to find the answer / fix to this problem. So to anyone else with this problem, just keep closing and opening the game till it runs ok. The most ive had to do it is about 8 times. Which is about 15 seconds per time :P

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have the same problem and if I mess around with the compatibility too much I wind up getting other errors, things like "unable to initialize input devices" so I guess for now our best bet is to just keep open closing

Yes, i still get the issue... however ive noticed that when i get one particular loading screen, that it works from there.

Is there any way to delete or remove all the other loading screens so it always displays only one?

Phew you mugs!!

you saved my week!

I'm getting a new portable Acer PC on Monday (with Vista installed - couldnt get one with XP) and I've been dying to find out if Fallout 2 would work on it.
Im in the mist of contemplating completing the game with a female sciene geek, with lots of charisma.(..yes, the world of computer gaming knows no bounds!!)

Good to know that it works :D

I got this issue when I installed fallout 1 on my Vista x64 rig with an 8800GTX. I fixed it by running the program in Windows XP compatibility mode with none of the other boxes checked (running in win 98 mode gave me the blackout problem). I still get the odd colors every once in a while when I start the game, but I found that if I ALT+TAB out of the game and back into it the color issues go away.

Now, anyone know of a program that will let me run this game in a fullscreen letter box on my widescreen monitor?

'lo all! I just registered here, thought i would stop by as this issue seems to be ongoing. just got fallout for some nostalgia on my Vista PC and experienced colour problems in all compatibility modes - turning SLi off seems to have fixed the problem though - may be obvious and you've already done so but thought I would note it up. enjoy ;)

I have no idea what SLi is, but we like it when people come up with working solutions.

SLi is nVidia's tech where two of their graphics cards work together to render frames at the same time. It can either split the contents of frames between the cards for equal workload, or have each card render every other frame. Basically parallel processing for graphics cards.

Fairly good boost in performance, but it's incompatible with some games. Especially older ones.

ATI's equivalent of the tech is called CrossFire. Doesn't work as well, but the same principles lie behind it on the whole.

Windows vista doesnt like fallout

When i try to load fallout 2 on vista It just says Error initializing video mode 650 x 480. Yes i tried using compatability mode.

When it comes to Vista it seems there are many questions and few answers so far. There should be ~50 posts pretty much like yours so look around and maybe there's a clue.

I have been able to play both Fallout 1 and 2 on Vista and the only issue I get is for Fallout 1, the numbers and some graphics get that discolored look...

But it plays.

Somehow, Wine in Linux gets better than recent versions of Windows when it comes to terms of actually using older software... Either get back Windows XP, or use Linux :)

This is probably a bit late for most of you using Vista.

I found with Fallout 2 that ticking just Disable desktop composition dealt with some of the graphical errors. The option turns off Aero and Transparency settings within the OS which conflict with some of the images colours within their palette.

However I'm still having a few crashes here and there, it's pretty much a 'Save often' affair, however I'll keep tweaking until it works perfectly.
