I'm looking to replace my aging GeForce 7900 GS with something with a little more kick to it, prefferably jump straight to 1 GB GPU memory.

I've been thinking about <s>GeForce with CUDA 9600 GT Gainward 1GB HDMI&DVI (PCI-E) (DDR2)</s> Radeon HD 4870, since that seems affordable and is an increase over my old card.

Or maybe I should use two Radeon s 4*?

Some dxdiag:

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Dodatek Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206-1234)
BIOS: BIOS Date: 10/02/06 17:12:27 Ver: 08.00.12
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2048MB RAM

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce 7900 GS
DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0292&SUBSYS_342E1458&REV_A1
Display Memory: 256.0 MB

4870 is a good card, if you can put it into your computer.
I have it myself, and it is both affordable and capable.

agreed , in this price point it's best bung for a buck, increasing CPU clock speed to something like 2,4 wouldn't hurt

You'll also want to make sure that your PSU is adequate for the card. If it's too old you might have to upgrade that as well.

Also, the 4890 might be worth considering if the price difference isn't too significant - here it's only about $40 more than the 1GB 4870.

The 4870 is a good card, but your c2d is going to bottleneck it.

That is why I'd recommend going for 4850 or 9800GT, unless you are planing to upgrade your CPU in near future as well. 1.86ghz just isn't fast enough to get most of that card. I even doubt you would get any use for 1 GB video memory with it, you might as well stick with 512 MB.

Don't build a crossfire unless you plan to change your processor.
You have a HUGE bottleneck, even for 1 card, let alone two...

Well, it served me well so far, Clear Sky and SoC on near maximum settings practically flawlessly (30-40 FPS), same for Arkham Asylum, Assassins Creed and Red Alert 3.

Guerilla's physics engine did smother it :/

The PSU is a Chieftec 400W, December 2006.

Then you have to replace that too, i had a cheap 550W for my 8800 Ultra(R.I.P) and i always had problem playing games. you should go for a 700W Tagan.

Anything over 500W from a quality brand should do.
