I think ( As mentioned in another post in general chat ) that guns are too easy to get and use. I personally think that the diffuculty level should change how easy it is to get guns.

Note: You should pick the skill level at the begginning of each new game.

Easy: You should start off with a good gun or 2, such as a Hunting Rifle or something. Guns should be pretty cheap.
Medium: You should start with an okay gun. Like a .44 Eagle or something. Guns should be medium priced.
Hard: No gun. Just maybe a knife or a spear. Guns should be expensive. And rare.

hey guns ant that hard to build and keep in mind the US is the most well armed state in the world hell chicogo gangs probibly have more and better guns then some small countrys

The questions are “How many would stay in working order after 100 to 200 years?” ”How many bullets would work without bursting in your face?” I think that in a post-apocalyptic world there would be a hell of a lot more pipe gun like guns and less perfect-working-order M16s. Last of all if the world went post apocalyptic in 207X, the Government would have had a mass burning of weapon stocks outside of a “Vault” or out their hands.

true but guns are very easy to manufactuer there hasent realy been a new idea in gun manufactuer or disine (mearly refinment and i point to the m-60 as a perfict exsample) since the first world war the hard part is the chemistry behind the gun but if people are capable of mantaning powered armor or plasma rifles i think they would be at the leval of produsing percuion caps and smokeless powder besides i would tend to think military arms would be designed to withstand alot of abuse espeashaly guns along the lines of the AK. i would say that guns would be avalibe (in volume)in a maner simaler to the old west lots of them but most would be of the simpler design but there would certenly qawite a few automatic wep. simply becuse there would be a markit and the capablity for the more advanced areas to produse them.

I always liked the idea of being able to upgrade your own wepons (probably because I came up with it myself). You would recuire special skills or perks, as well as tools and components. For instance, a onehander character is very good with onehanded weapons and hardly average with rifles. If you would be able to put a laserlight or a scope of somekind on a desert eagle, 223. pistol, plasmarifle or for wackos among you, on a 10 mm pistol. This skill would also include an option to modify your ammo or combine 2 weapons. (like trying to put a grenade launcher under a sniper rifle, or attacking an explosive device to a weapon so you could throw it at your enemy when you run out of ammo) This way, there will be so many different possibilities (instead of just 2 (normal and upgrade)) and you will hardly ever find anyone in or outside (the web) who had the exact same weapon.

hmmm... this looks better on paper.

Id like to see less weapons avaliable in the games... Contrary to what *someone* said, weapon manufacture isnt that simple, the AK-47 is the simplest assault rifle on the planet, its made from punched-out sheets of metal and has only 7 moving parts, and it wasnt unknown in vietnam for a village blacksmith to be able to repair one. However, this durability comes at a price, as the Kalashikov was very innacurate by modern standards... But, being able to MAKE an AK-47 isnt that easy, for one thing, the firing pin must be made of very good quality metal otherwise it will break upon firing, the barrel must be rifled well or the weapon becomes even more inaccurate... many more problems can pop-up when a weapon is inexpertly made, and thats not even mentioning the weapons tolorance for poorly made ammunition.... So maybe weapons could be manufactured in the FO world, but unless it was in somplace like the BOS or Vault City, its likely to me little more than a pipe rifle. One thing that could be added to FO3 would be weapon quality... cheap weapons "jam" often, leaving you in a tight spot in combat... better quality weapons do not jam as often, so will be more worthwile carrying around...

I think they were making weapons. They said they were machinists, after all.

They could have just been making ammo. You'd need to be a machinist to do that, and you wouldn't need all the equipment that making a gun would require.

Guns would require a high grade of steel for the firing pins and barrels, casings are supposed to be malliable.

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Feb-11-02 AT 04:55AM (GMT)[p]That's not entirely true. It's extremely easy to make ammo if you have the caseing left. Even us 13 year olds in hunters ed class made some new rifle rounds, and shotgun rounds are especially easy. You don't really need any special tools, just like a vice or something. when we did it we did had a special type of vice which would crimp the bullets correctly and and it seal the rifle rounds, but it really wasn't all that special. I'm sure anyone with access to gunpower and a vice could do it.

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Feb-11-02 AT 05:24AM (GMT)[p]They might be able to get good steel from unusable guns or gun parts. Since a lot of guns only require the barrel to be machined, it's possible they could make new weapons. However, I'm not sure what equipment they would need to work the steel they did get.

Hey-hey-hey! Lemme tell you sum thin'
-The life expectancy of a gun became longer, loongeer and looongeeerrr!! Example this. US Army issued Krag jorgensen in 1898 and replaced it in 1903 with Springfield-Mauser. The M-1911 .45 pistol created in 1906, issued in 1911 by the US army and replaced in 1987. My dad (An Army Lieutenant Colonel) still issued a Browning HP. Nothing wrong but this gun created in 1955 by Army Arsenal!! That's mean the guns is younger 4 years than my dad. Well my dad's in 1977 campaign in East Timor still carry a pre-1940 M-1918A4 BAR. Well he replaced that with German-then-Portuegese-then-East-Timor militia vintage MG-34 Machine GUns (phew still old guns).
Creating guns is simple you know. THe Pakistan border tribes perhaps. Now they could built M-16 or AK-47 WITHOUT sophisticated machinery and facility. As long you got lathe, mill and drilling machine that's easy.

Guns would easily survive through a nuclear war. First off, we know all vaults had a stock of guns and ammo. Guns could live if they were not in the direct blast of the bomb, and considering PEOPLE lived through it, im sure guns would make it through also. Any suberb that lived through the war without being totally destroyed would probably have a slew of shotguns and mp5s from the SWAT team, not to mention countless pistols for the regular cops. And yes, guns have great lifespan. Ak isnt that inacurate, actually the first shot is very acurate, it just has some strong recoil.
