Half-Life 2: Episode One

As I haven't seen any thread pertaining to this title (correct and merge me if I'm wrong, please), I'm filling in and asking: What are your opinions on the former Aftermath expansion pack for Half-Life 2?

In my opinion, the game is nothing short of (pun intended) excellent. The slightly improved Source engine gives even a better portrayal of the burning Citadel and City 17, and brilliant script ensures an interesting, and slightly 'mindfucking' game.

Yes, I am a Half-Life fanboy somewhat. Your move.

i was a HL & opfor fanboy (blue shift sucked)

i didnt really enjoy HL2 that much & i'm not planning on spending money to play the expansion (which like blue shift can be played through in a few hours).

the reactions i hear from the expansion are:
- too short
- more of the same
- well scripted/nice events

my conclusion is that it's too expensive for such short gameplay.

Well, here we can get the box version for some 15 $, so for me it's kinda cheap. Anyways, I agree, it is kinda short, but excells in terms of script (Stalker car trauma, who played, knows), and the immortal..

Zombines with grenades!

Aye, Circuit City here had it for 8 or 9 dollars this past week so you're at least getting the expansion for a lot cheaper than you get most other expansions and from what I've heard, it's pretty fleshed out. I would give it a try but my laptop can't even manage well with HL2 and I haven't had the time to play it.

last i heard it was 19.99 euro's here. for 8 euro's i'd probably buy it, yeah.

I've never been a huge Half-Life fan, though I enjoyed the games.

My main problem with Episode One is that it has introduced me to the dreaded stuttering bug. I get about ten to fifteen minutes of gameplay, then my entire system freezes and I have to reboot. I find the game rather unplayable in this state. Also makes it aggravating to troubleshoot.

I still haven't picked it up and I'm personally hesitant to, since I prefer getting more than 5 hours of entertainment from a game, even if it's ten bucks.

Loved it. It's short, but personal only added the "omygod, omygod, what happens next? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT??? I'll sooo gonna buy the next episode!" feel, and I even couldn't enjoy the HDR, because of my crappy video card... On top of that, I spent ~30$ on it, and it's kind thrilling to see people think 20$ is too expensive...

The episode was designed to be short. Part of their philosophy for these episodes was that each would take about 4 hours to complete, acting as chapters in a larger game-text.

I didnt like the Citadel part at the end of Half-life 2, and the in Episode 1 it was hardly any better.

When I got past that part and finally got a damn gun it was pretty good, though for me to spend another $20 on the next episode it has to be a lot better than this one.

If that's really the point, then why charge twenty bucks for it? Also, I think this whole thing is ridiculous, it just gives Valve an excuse to release basically the same short game over and over again and bank on the franchise more than they already are.

Three hours of gameplay (including when I ate my tea). Fifteen quid for three hours, and the worst thing is I know I'm going to buy episode two.

So looking at all the trailers of the game, i notice that:

1: I killed like two striders, and they were quite a focus of the trailers.

2: About these stalkers that have been hyped up to fuck, I counted seeing about seven in total (obviously not counting that train).

Roll on episode two

I havn't bought it, but propably will at some point. And while it might seem like a lot of money for such a short game, I find that shops often charge the same amount for dvd's that's so much shorter, even with the extra material.

Just finished it. Took me a few hours and I was trying to make it last. Definitely too frickin' short but the scripted events and some visuals are brilliant as always.
