Half of atheists and agnostics believe in hell & heaven?

Agnostics I can somewhat understand, but atheists that believe in a soul or afterlife are definitely confused when they call themselves atheists. Any sort of spiritual or similar belief implies a god or god-like being, and belief in an afterlife or soul falls under the category "spiritual". Saying that you're "agnostic" is just a simpler way of saying that you don't really care too much whether any religious belief is true or not, so it shouldn't be surprising that some lean towards believing in it.

Still - as you said it's a study done by a christian group so I wouldn't put any faith (lol pun-tastic!) in their "surveys" of non-believers.

Either the survey is BS, or a lot of people call themselves atheists without even knowing what the word means... I tend to think the former.

"One out of every eight atheists and agnostics even believe that accepting Jesus Christ as savior probably makes life after death possible." Haha...

Those least likely to believe in life after death were Hispanics, Busters (ages 20-38), residents of the West, atheists and agnostics, those associated with a faith other than Christianity, and unchurched adults – although more than two-thirds of each of these groups accept the existence of an afterlife.

Buhllshite.

Btw, this rox:

Hahaha, that's priceless. Between this and the other part you quoted that site just destroyed it's "benefit of the doubt" factor. WTF is a "Buster", anyway? I'm assuming they aren't using it in the old-school rap sense.

Either it's complete bull, or it's because of the broad and vague definitions of all of the thins concerned. Atheism, agnosticism, afterlife, heaven and hell all can be taken to mean several different things.

Yeah... It's probably complete bull. Makes you think about the stupidity of the media and for the 100th time though, since I've seen this test mentioned in supposedly "real" newspapers. (And we don't have any major newspapers of the christian flavour here, so they are just stupid...)

lol, televagelism comes to the internet!

I officially entitle it: e-vangelism.

calculon, I hate you. That is the most likely used-to-death-pun I have ever heard someone invent.

Seems fairly shitty, Ill admit that.

While there is no dominant view of Hell, two particular perspectives are popular. Four out of ten adults believe that Hell is “a state of eternal separation from God’s presence” (39%) and one-third (32%) says it is “an actual place of torment and suffering where people’s souls go after death.” A third perspective that one in eight adults believe is that “Hell is just a symbol of an unknown bad outcome after death” (13%). Other respondents were “not sure” or said they that they do not believe in an afterlife (16%).

Belief in life after death, like the existence of God, is widely embraced: 8 out of 10 Americans (81%) believe in an afterlife of some sort. Another 9% said life after death may exist, but they were not certain. Just one out of every ten adults (10%) contend that there is no form of life after one dies on earth.

What the hell?

Seems they bent reality to show what they want instead what is truth. It deserves a Nobel Prize!

Oh, their tolerance margin is 3%:
13% - 3% = 10%
13% + 3% = 16%

EDIT: oops, there is "not sure". Heh...

Most serveys seem to be BS.

question

At school we were given a survey of fifty questions about our inefficient education system. However there were only about a dozen question variations. The same thing worded differently.

I immediately thought it was a BS survey designed to get what ever result you want.

Am I being overly cynical? Is there some other reason such as a need for greater accuracy?

I think not.

Oh yeah, I knew all along that all those Virgin Mary statues were merely for decorative, non-spiritual purposes. Damn heathens.
