"Going gold..." Confirmed as a fake
by Icarus @ 9:33am Saturday 28th August, 2004

This morning it was confirmed that the post made concerning Half-Life 2 going gold, orginally thought to be made by Valve's Gabe Newell, was in fact posted by someone that had found his password and used it to post with his account. A Valve employee confirmed it in this thread on the SteamPowered forums.

false.

Do you really think the gold announcement will be made with a 4 word forum post? OMFG will count as four words by itself! :-]

Also, patient is not a word I would use to describe people's manner of waiting.

At any rate, it's 8:18am ... sorry I slept in or I would have stomped sooner. At any other rate, it looks like hl2fallout.com cleared things up a while ago (relatively) with their Fool's Gold post.

they should release it at april's fool's day , that way, no one will believe them and they make a huge loss at sales because i am funny.

Snake, the preload thing on Steam are 2 month old stuff (says valve and common sense for that matter)...

they are textures, sounds and other stuff that wont change anymore. you are not allowed to preload the entire fucking game you know...

the only use of that is to have less stuff to download when it actually goes gold.

agreed, they should go gold soon, but it's not gunna be within a week of the preload...

The preload is not 2 months old, it started popping up when I checked yesterday.
And it is the entire game only encrypted.

wow, then i don't think it'll take them more than a few monthes...or even much less, that sounds like they are just polishing the shit to make it ship shape for ship-ing.

yeez

HL2 is going to pwn, and I sincerely hope it goes gold soon.

And why does Sweden suck again? At least we have healthcare for everyone, and not a third of the population beneath the poverty line, or extreme Nurgle-ish obesity. Meh.

After one crazy night of theories, server mayhem and IP tracing, we've finally gotten to the bottom of this mess. In a twist of hilarity, it seems that Gabe Newell's account password was set to 'gaben'. Person x guessed this and made the "going gold on Monday" post which we've heard so much about. The user (who we believe is the same person x) then made this post just minutes ago using Gabe's account [announcing that he guessed Gabe's pass as "gaben"]

After a quick double-check, it seems that this was exactly what happened.

bwahahahahahahahahhahahahaha

also remember Cliffe's pw getting "hacked" on csnation. turned out his pw was "cliffe". the admin had set up his account that way and he never changed it...

thumbs up for Valve employeeeez!

I think that between this and the leak, Gabe should be nominated for some kind of computer security award.

According to some digging by GameSpot, Doug Lombardi has now been quoted as saying:

We're currently planning to send release candidates to Vivendi by September 15th. However, VUG hasn't given us a ship date yet.

So now it seems we've missed Gabe's original estimate (end of July) by about six weeks. Meanwhile, all over HL nation, fans are likely having a massive feeling of déjà vu.

The GameSpot article goes on to speculate that a November release will follow, as that assumption is what prompted the comment by Doug in the first place. You can read the entire article in the Rumor Control section of GameSpot's site here (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/09/03/news_6106680.html).

According to this post over at Half-Life 2 Fallout Forums:

Yes, the RC went to VU yesterday.

This quote supposedly from Gabe Newell. Considering the latest fiasco over there with Gabe's account getting overtaken, we will endevour to check in with VALVe on this and confirm it.

Update: PHL has now confirmed this news with both Doug Lombardi and Gabe Newell, who says it was his post.
