halflife2.net said:"Going gold..." Confirmed as a fake
by Icarus @ 9:33am Saturday 28th August, 2004
This morning it was confirmed that the post made concerning Half-Life 2 going gold, orginally thought to be made by Valve's Gabe Newell, was in fact posted by someone that had found his password and used it to post with his account. A Valve employee confirmed it in this thread on the SteamPowered forums.
Valve said:false.
Do you really think the gold announcement will be made with a 4 word forum post? OMFG will count as four words by itself! :-]
Also, patient is not a word I would use to describe people's manner of waiting.
At any rate, it's 8:18am ... sorry I slept in or I would have stomped sooner. At any other rate, it looks like hl2fallout.com cleared things up a while ago (relatively) with their Fool's Gold post.

And it is the entire game only encrypted.

In a twist of hilarity, it seems that Gabe Newell's account password was set to 'gaben'. Person x guessed this and made the "going gold on Monday" post which we've heard so much about. The user (who we believe is the same person x) then made this post just minutes ago using Gabe's account [announcing that he guessed Gabe's pass as "gaben"]
After a quick double-check, it seems that this was exactly what happened.

www.planethalflife.com said:According to some digging by GameSpot, Doug Lombardi has now been quoted as saying:
We're currently planning to send release candidates to Vivendi by September 15th. However, VUG hasn't given us a ship date yet.
So now it seems we've missed Gabe's original estimate (end of July) by about six weeks. Meanwhile, all over HL nation, fans are likely having a massive feeling of déjà vu.
The GameSpot article goes on to speculate that a November release will follow, as that assumption is what prompted the comment by Doug in the first place. You can read the entire article in the Rumor Control section of GameSpot's site here (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/09/03/news_6106680.html).

According to this post over at Half-Life 2 Fallout Forums:
Yes, the RC went to VU yesterday.
This quote supposedly from Gabe Newell. Considering the latest fiasco over there with Gabe's account getting overtaken, we will endevour to check in with VALVe on this and confirm it.
Update: PHL has now confirmed this news with both Doug Lombardi and Gabe Newell, who says it was his post.
