Hammer & Sickle English Demo!

Sweet, thanks Slaughter. Been looking forward to this game for awhile.

@SimpleMinded: It uses the Silent Storm engine, so if you played that game you can expect something similar in gameplay, if not the exact same gameplay.

Now I was on game rankings looking up Mario and Luigi for the DS (anyone played it? looks pretty neat and I've been thinking about picking it up) when I saw that GameSpy gave hammer and sickle a 2/5. Ehhh they said it was short, and had a horrendous story.

I have no faith in gamespy's reviews of anything, and I haven't read any reviews from sites or people that I do trust. My download should finish in 1/2 hour, I'll give it a try and post my impressions.

Edit: %$#!@#, just read that it has starforce. What is it with European game companies and putting this crap in their demos?

1/2 hour?

Hmm, seven minutes total for me.

What's starforce?

Starforce is a copy protection program with a lot of bad side effects:

Starforce has received criticism for installing its own device driver onto computers. The Starforce drivers are often linked to system instability and computer crashes. If these problems occur, the end-user would be unware as to the cause of the problem, and would be helpless to solve the problem.

Moreover, the Starforce drivers, installed on your system, grant ring 0 (system level) privileges to any code under the ring 3 (user level) privileges. Thus, any virus or trojan can get OS privileges and totally control your system. Since Windows 2000, the Windows line security and stability got enhanced by separating those privileges, but with the Starforce drivers, the old system holes and instabilities are back and any program (or virus) can reach the core of your system by using the Starforce drivers as a backdoor.

And the best part is that it doesn't go away after you uninstall the game you were playing, it just stays there as a hidden device driver.

Hmm.

I'm sure there's a way to neuter it somehow, but the last time I went looking for *mystary* programs, I got a shitload of spyware...

in the demo... what the fuck do you do once you get into town. the only thing i can think of is to shoot the cops or get arrested (i havent tryed playing out the latter).

I kind of trust Gamespy's review. The flaws they mention are exactly the same as those who brought Silent Storm down.

Jeez, how much does it cost to hire English-speaking actors?

A bit more on the starforce copy protection, does the whole issue with the hidden driver applies only in starforce 3 or in every version?

Every version. The chances of it actually harming your system are pretty slim, I think, it's more the principle of the thing that I and everyone objects to.
