Hardware question

i never understood why people keep wanting the 'heavy duty game laptops'. they're heavy, hot, have shitty battery life.

why not get a decent game rig and a seperate administrative laptop instead? you don't need all that raw power to run FO1 & 2!

Gaming laptops are a mixed blessing, I agree, but a permanent location to set up a tower is a situation that fleets some peoples abilities. From what I saw, the second laptop "X300" is more bang for the buck. It has more features, and you can expand the RAM to 8 gigs, which is almost a dire need on Vista.

The first one "Pretty, fluffy features, alot of fuu fuu."

The second one : a bit more utilitarian and practical.

Unless he plans on 'changing to'/'starting with' an x64 bit OS, that doesn't matter. Most of the time when people use a x32 bit OS with 4 gig of ram, it only displays as 2.5-3.5 because the OS has to allocate memory addresses to other devices.

EDIT:
Well, it comes with a x64 OS. I take that back!

EDIT:
Shat! It doesn't specify on the second one. Either way, I'd go with a x64 OS. That way you don't get robbed of .5-1.5 gig of memory even if you get 4 gigs.

I would love to get a desktop, but I move/fly too much. It's just easier to pack. I also don't relish the idea of buying a desktop in China.

I also just discovered that there is an US version of the same model:

It looks like I might have to go for the British version, even if I am paying 1.5 times the price. That's 2000 pounds, if nobody caught that.

The Canadian model comes with x64 OS, but it has crappier graphic card, and crappier CPU. Even after the rise of the CDN, most companies still screw us over. The US version has better GPU and CPU, but uses a crappier screen. Sigh, we shall see.

If money is not a problem buy the british one. Just make sure you check the volume. Mine makes alot of sound from vibrations inside the machine once the fan starts moving. going to take it in to complain one of these days.

exactly my thoughts ! i have a good gaming rig at home. and i recently bought myself an acer aspire one Netbook.its not that strong and it doesn't even have a dvd/cd rom drive but it was cheap, and very small and i can carry it almost anywhere anytime.I just need it for java programming and stuff when i am at the uni so i wot even need all that power. If i wanna play a game i will play it at home with my PC.

well, i'm planning on buying a netbook as well. and play FO1/2 on it (with the resolution mod etc) :)

but no modern games will work on it, of course.

The UK one is TOO expensive for what it is. Sure you'll be able to run all the recent games but keep in mind that it's a 9800 GTX, not a GTX 280 and that it will likely be obsolete pretty soon. 2000 pounds for a rig that will be obsolete next year ? No thanks...You'd have the same rig for less than half this price if it weren't a laptop.

Don't even think about getting the one with 9700M GTS at 2000 dollars...That's just...dumb.

I haven't tried fallout on it yet but i am satisfied with it so far ! :)
I bought it for 399 Euros with windows xp.there was also a cheaper version that costed 347 euros but it came with Linux and i had to order it.

this is it btw :

i'm leaning towards the Gigabyte M912M, because it converts into a tablet.

note: not the M912 / M912X, because thatone sucks.

Again the question of mobility, if I am going to travel home for a short time I will not be able to take with me a big pc, while a laptop can be packed to go in a minnute. I do not have a car and so a laptop is the only option if i am going home for christmas for example.

pretty awesome for e-books and reading websites (not so much for typing obviously). watching a movie on a train or something as well.

or, Fallout in tablet mode with the stylus? that's be awesome. i wonder if that'd work. or well, the worst thing that can happen is that you have to use a mouse. :P

hmmmm...nice !
i checked it on amazon right now and it costs 540 euros.pretty cheap too !

it's on the expensive side for a netbook, but with the tablet mode & the touchscreen... well, i'm certainly considering it.
