Have you guys played any of those Baldur's Gate games?

Those games are lit af!!!

Baldur's Gate EE and Baldur's Gate 2 EE has been taking most of my attention away. I have Siege of Dragonspear, though I haven't reached it yet. I just love how much you have to prepare, especially if you're a mage character. Like if you don't have a protection from petrification spell, and your character gets petrified, then you're fucked. Also the idea of an Alignment for your character is cool. And most importantly, Sorcerer is the best mage class.

Shit, maybe I should just play Dungeons and Dragons by itself.

Anyways, what are y'all's thoughts on this?

BG, BG2, IW, IW2, NWN, NWN2, even the broken TOEE, they are among my favorite games ever. I just really like how they implemented the DnD mechanics in these games, as they always give me the best replay value out of any game. I sometimes spend up to 4-5 hours just making my party/character and then you have all the planning and possibilities with a bunch of spells, loot, party configuration, plus a deep well established lore and gameworld. I'm not sure why none of the better dev houses release any DnD based games anymore (can someone elaborate on this?), but if they would provide similar experience to the games i listed, i could probably live off only DnD based games.

I am the same way with those games + Planescape: Torment, I own them in hardcopy and on GOG.com that is how much I like them (also own Fallout 1 and 2, KotOR 1 and 2, Arcanum and other "oldies" both in hardcopy and GOG.com).

I can't talk about the Enhanced Editions, since I already own the old games at least twice I never looked into getting the EE versions though.

After Fallout had opened my eyes for pc rpg's, Baldur's Gate further drew me in and made me into the pc rpg nerd I am today. It's still amongst my absolute best gaming experiences, easily top 3, and could in some senses easily be one of my alltime favorite games. Even if better games have come before and after it, the overall experience I had with it is next to impossible to top. I was sorely disappointed with BG2. I can see why most people prefer it over the first game, but I personally felt it lacked a lot of the sense of adventure and discovery the first game had. Yes, the writing was better in 2, it was much bigger and more complex. But it lacked the wide open areas, the combat was too over the top (magic tic-tac-toe, if you will), and I felt a lot more constrained in my part set-up. BG2 has to be the one game I have wanted to go back to and replay the most over the years, but every time I do, I lose interest halfway through Irenicus Dungeon.

Icewind Dale was fun for one playthrough, but was also a bit of a letdown. IWD2 got me very hyped, and it did some great things, but ultimately was also a disappointment. It starts off great, but soon becomes a chore with boring locations and lazy writing.

I've been thinking about replaying BG 1 and 2 EE, but I just haven't got around to it. I'm mostly interested in the first one, to see what improvements have been made. But I'm fully aware I can't recapture that first time through.

I would recommend checking them out. The Enhanced Editions adds new companions and new quests.

I actually never got the play any BG game besides Dark alliance 1-2 with my friend. I also missed icewind dale.

Through GOG (I was too young to even buy the originals), I was able to play the main games and it was a blast. I still had fun even after three full playthroughs (as a Cavalier, a Skald and a Kensage).

While the writing is nothing special (especially when compared to Planescape: Torment), the overall experience and progression from weak nobody to unyielding demigod was one of my best gaming experiences ever. I've heard varying opinions about the Enhanced Editions so I'm a little hesitant about getting them.
