There are plenty of fan made projects that could use a programmer.
You could make a new editor with a 101 new functions but if the game engine doesn't support them that's a lot of work gone to waste.
Have you even explored the trigger format and tried to add a custom trigger? The tutorial maps have triggers not available in the editor. Create a folder called triggers under core\editor and save the triggers as a .trg file. Then explore that format, maybe you can add new scripting to it? Then you can see if the game will act on the new triggers, if so then you might be able to create a trigger editor and leave the map making to FT Tools.
