Help with running Fallout 1 on Vista

First time out of the vault
My friend has a Asus G1 laptop with Vista on it and we're trying to get Fallout to run smoothly.

It ran well for a little bit in 16 bit mode, and then we turned up the volume and the whole screen went screwy.

Not only that, but we just had to reinstall it because every time we tried to load the game it came up with an error message saying that Fallout requires at least 20 megs of hard disc space to run. (We used the Humongous installation if that matters)

The game also freezes up whenever Vista pops up a notice or announcement, be it from the internet, telling you that you plugged the 'puter into the wall, and so forth.

Any ideas and suggestions would be very appreciated. And of course, if you need more details on something, please just ask.

OK, that answers the 20 meg error question, but what about the other issues? Any ideas? Or did I simply miss the "Fallout on Vista" thread?

I don't know about your specific problem(s), but searching for "vista" yields a handful of results. Turning off programs and applications running in the background is always a good thing to try.
